Trouble Programming a 2000 Camry Remote Fob

A huge thanks to all those who helped me get a working master key on my 2000 Camry XLE (thread here). I'm now trying to program the remote entry fob with the car but having no luck. Hopefully this is the appropriate section for this

I've tried two different methods I found online (door opening and electronic locks) at least a dozen times each but have never managed to enter the programming mode. I found somewhere that having a blown dome light or ECU fuse could prevent programming mode - all fuses are good. Also read that a check engine light could cause an issue - no lights on the dash.

Any tips from the pros? I'm not sure what I could be missing.

EDIT:
I just remembered one thing that strikes me as a bit odd - as I'm doing the power locks sequence, it seems to run out of juice. The first lock/unlock is strong but, by 3 or so, it isn't fully locking/unlocking. I do still hear the strong "click" though.

EDIT for solution:
Turns out you can manually move the lock switch for the 5x lock/unlock sets. Thanks to keymax for the tip!

Thanks for the response PocketHero. I'm not sure I understand - I have been attempting a manual sequence (IE: start with open driver's side door, insert/remove key, lock/unlock doors 5x, close/open door, lock/unlock doors 5x, insert/turn key on/off). I suppose I could purchase an OBD programming solution, but I don't expect to have much continued need of one. Is that your suggestion though? To go with an OBD programmer? I'd probably be trying a cheap knock off from AliExpress or something if so...

2000 Toyota Camry Remote Programming
Have all transmitters for the vehicle at hand

1. With the key out of the ignition, unlock and open drivers door (all other doors must be closed)
2. Within 5 seconds,
Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn it) and Pull key out.
Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn it) and Pull key out.



3. Within 40 seconds,
Close then open the drivers door.
Close then open the drivers door.
Insert the key into the ignition (Do NOT Turn it) and Pull key out.

4. Within 40 seconds.
Close then open the drivers door.
Close then open the drivers door.
Insert the key into ignition and leave it in the ignition.
Close the drivers door. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF (Do NOT Start or crank engine).
Remove the key from the ignition.

5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the door locks do not cycle at this point or try the alternate procedure listed below.

6. Within 40 second,
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remote simultaneously for 1.5 seconds.
B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press and hold the lock button by itself.
Within 10 seconds, the door locks should lock and then unlock once indicating successful programming.
(If the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps A and B in step 6 as the remote was not accepted)
Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.

7. Open drivers door.

Alternate programming procedure: Have all remotes for the vehicle ready. Toyota Avalon vehicles use step 10a, all other vehicles use 10b.

1. Make sure all doors are closed
2. Open Driver’s door
3. Insert key into ignition, then remove it
4. Press LOCK and UNLOCK on the vehicle door lock switch at 1 second intervals 5 times.
5. Close and re-open driver’s door
6. Press LOCK and UNLOCK on the vehicle door lock switch at 1 second intervals 5 times.
7. Insert key into ignition switch
8. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF (Do NOT Start or crank engine).
9. Remove Key from ignition
10. Door locks should cycle to confirm entry into programming mode
a. AVALON – Press LOCK on remote for a minimum of 1 second
b. ALL OTHER VEHICLES – Press and hold LOCK & UNLOCK together for 1.5 seconds; then press and hold LOCK until the locks cycle
11. Locks should cycle once to confirm programming. If they cycle twice, the programming failed
12. Repeat button procedure to program remaining remotes
13. Close driver’s door. Test remotes.

I can get a knock off TechStream on AliExpress for under $20. Not sure I'd be able to get a locksmith at that rate - but it would definitely be faster than 20 days!

Thanks sleepyrz - those are the two methods I had linked and have been trying. I've given both fast and slow a try, but I'll try a "speed run" to see if that makes a difference.


Update: After another hour of trying the manual methods, I ordered a TechStream knockoff. Hopefully it'll work - I'll report back.

with the manual method there are two things that may prevent not to enter programming proccedure
1-drivers door sensor(opened-closed door) do not work properly
2-ignition sensor for inserted key also do not work properly
i had those issues many times times on old cars and after fixing those everything worked perfect

Well, my TechStream showed up today - opened up a whole new world! Except, you know, for remote programming. I tried V8, V12, and V13. All options I got under Immobilizer/Utility were "Customize" (nothing there), Auto Registration Closure, Transponder Key Erasure, Transponder Code Registration. No wireless code love.

Any ideas? I tried plugging it into my '06 Sienna (has a working fob) and it didn't see it there either. I called dealership to confirm this car can handle a fob.

Nothing in the glove box and the remote is all plastic.

thanks for the link - I saw that one back when I was trying to manually enter programming mode. I'd hoped that TechStream would bypass that, as I spent around three hours trying the two methods at different speeds. For the record, no burned out fuses or lights, no check engine light, and no issues with the ignition.

Manual programming is all there is, there is no obd access.

How do you know your Camry is equipped for keyless entry? Did you verify by VIN?

If it is equipped, then you need to use the lock cycle 5x version not the door one open/close x2.
If your locks on your car stop locking during the process it wont enter programming mode in my experience. If all your locks cycle each time during the process then check door sensor and key in ignition sensor.

If it makes you feel better, I usually refuse to program/sell any remotes for toyota/lexus that require the lock/unlock 5x method because there is almost always issue's with it from age of vehicles.
