    Default Dreambox illegal?

    Hi guys,

    I need info.

Has the dreambox been classed as illegal in the UK. We are talking about a box with just Jade PLi and nothing else?

its not illegal to own one as you buy these as fta boxes which is not illegal. its what you do with it afterwards that could be classed illegal.

Only the Dreambox-100 was deemed illegal by a German Court early this year after Nagravision took out an injuction against Dream against the 100s Hardware architecture been too close to that of there licenced Receivers.

The Court Banned sales of the DreamBox 100 in Germany this has not been appealed to date by Dream-Multimedia.

This is the only Case of Dreamboxs been illegal in Europe, some countrys in the Middle-East have also out lawed all Dreambox receivers and there use to stamp out Piracy.

But as for the UK Dreambox receiver are 100% Legal

Only genuine Dreambox's are legal to use in the UK, provided they are used for FTA purposes only. OEM linux receivers are also legal, and so are Openmedia's etc... As long as a "clone" Dreambox doesn't display the DMM logo, the receiver is not deemed illegal, especially when the source code is open source

As stated by other members here, owning a DM or any other box for fta purposes is not illegal.

You can even use one to share your sub around your own house and still not break the law...

No , that would be illegal in the UK but you wouldn't get in as much bother as you would putting up a pay server, or if sharing with many many people. Any receiver being sold as a new Dreambox 500S will definitely be illegal. If it's sold as an OEM linux receiver, or some other variation then the receiver becomes perfectly legal to buy/sell/use(within boundaries)

Similarly, a Kryptview A780 is not illegal in the UK until you modify the firmware and/or connect it to the VM network. So in that case KV's are:
    Legal to buy
    Legal to sell
    Illegal to use
    Illegal to modify

You could say what's the point in it being illegal to use when you can buy one legally, but thats just a nice grey area of the law

at the end of the day, everyone is going to use it to get what they should not have, get channels they dont fully pay for, so not legal. otherwise they would use freeview from tv or buy freeview box

What we are saying is, if you did use the receiver as an FTA one, then its totally legal(provided its not a straight up clone) You can also use a DM 500S as a media centre so to speak, with the right modifications or any other dreambox for that matter, making the cost cheaper than other media centres out there!

And there's also the fact that these media centres also have a satellite tuner. You're looking to purchase a HTPC to do what a DMM can do tbh. Granted, you get more functionality with a HTPC, but if you want a media centre with a DVB-S tuner, a Dreambox is a cheap way of doing it

Its not illlegal, and is legal until tested in a court of law in the UK, which to my knowledge it never has and never will be.

If I sold you my car and in the T&Cs it said you are not allowed to drive it over 20mph, if you went over 20mph you would not be breakinig the law, although you would be breaking the T&C's that you singed up to. It may well be argued by yourself that the T&C's are unfair and you would more than likely win.

At the moment sharing your own sub around your own house is a moot point because we (the users) are not taking the providers (sly & vermin) to court, and they are not taking us to court.

They would not want to take you to court, because they would more than likely lose, then that would signal the downfall of their multi card systems were they charge a fortune.

EDIT - 100% agree with Bonesy's comment above!!!!
