I use the same clip with chips both in circuit and stand alone chip working fine (on normal condition). If the desoldered chips are tested with the clips and all fail the problem can be at one or more of these, the programmer, continuity and correctness of the clip and running cables and the chip itself. Soldering the bare chip with short small wires to a bare DB9 female connector and put it on the programmer would help you to locate a fault.

Read ICP any eeprom is danger ( may be bad dump > 50% is chanse for error reading ) as you say. So always is better to desolder out and read..

It's my 2 cents....

An well made programmer can read almost all eeproms incircuit. Must have in/out tristate and scaling output power with pullup resistor.
For example Codiprog is one of them and also Carprog. I dont want to talk about DP3 and Enigma. There are no problems for them to read any eeprom incircuit.

    I agree!!

I have a set of those clips, and i allways remove eeprom to read it. With clips, i think more than 75% errors on reading.
