I've noticed recently that ****8216 and ****8217 appears in posts. Can anyone tell me what it means?

I've attached a screen shot as an example

Heres the link to the original thread - http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums...manager-10997/

I think its because the font used in the origional text is not a font installed on the server.. ..

Yeah it's to do with copying and pasting from documents saved in a format the forum doesn't understand i.e unicode ANSI UTF8 etc.

The same can happen when using FTP.

Can you write that again but

                1) put it in quotes
                2) put in it code
                3) space out the words like he llo
                4) Have noticed some posts you link to come up as that thread
                some come up jumbled. e.g.

I understand what your trying to do there Meat-head to remedy the problem but if said user copies and pastes it via there pm on the forum or anywhere else on the forum it will appear the same in code-quotes etc.

This will only happen again if said user copies it from original source whether it be word - txt etc.

Once it's on here, copying it will be the same, I have my own forum and have come across the same issue.

Be that said I hope I am wrong but there is info explained here on how this works out.

                  Code:
                  http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~ggbaker/reference/characters/
Seriously its not worth looking into.

I've noticed this problem on other forums also..... Here on DK, if I'm copy and pasting, from either word or internet I'll paste into a text editor first, then from there into DK. Avoids the errors.

In newer versions of VBulletin there is icons for 'copy from word' or 'copy from text'

It also helps in avoiding code errors if code editing is enabled, unlike here

It's nothing to do with between forum copying and pasting, it is when a member copies something from a word doc or notepad doc etc, when it has been saved in an unknown format that a forum can not interpret.

If I upload something to my server, say the index.php in anything but UTF8, when I went back and looked at it it would not read the same state as I uploaded it in.

I am sure DF will know what I am talking about, I was just trying to explain what causes this issue.

Hi mate, I think you would be better off phrasing that as what does the issue think of Meat-Head

It's a common bug as you said and something that need to be looked at from a VB perspective I think.
