I've been a browser and registered member on the forum since October of 2021 and am now just getting to the introduction as I feel I now have the knowledge and savvy to contribute to the community here. From electrical diagnostics, waveform analysis, to DIY O-scope sensors for the picoscope etc. All the way to digging into or copying over Flash BINS in junkyard ECU's. I do my own auto repairs and maintenance.
Things have moved fast and have evolved into a labyrinth of CAN/K-line manufacture specific protocol's, various ISO's & UDS protocols, KWP2000, and proprietary CAN bus protocols...J1939 etc. It's an absolute wicked jungle out there now days! (Thank god for J2534!) I sure do miss the old days of my megasquirt ECU conversions; AFR maps with autotune VR tables!
I learned what I know via the early forums and via first hand experience on the many cars I've owned. From the 1978 GMC Sierra 1500 step-side pickup that I learned how to drive with (standard/stick-shift) in high-school. The first car I purchased outright was a MB W124 300E then a AMG C36. Graduated to a 2004 E55 in my 20's when I was young. Later on I needed a more "utilitarian" vehicle. A few P2 Volvos ended up filling that role. My 1986 Porsche 911 G-body Carrera Targa (3.2L air-cooled flat 6cyl with915 Gearbox) has been in the family since my Father acquired it. He passed it down to me years ago as a birthday present. That will forever stay in the family. So I have experience wrenching on these as well.
As for OEM diagnostic hardware/software experience: VIDA/DICE, MB STAR C4, & the usual 2534 pass through devices.
Experience with Programmers: ORANGE5, KESS/K-tag, CARPROG, X-PROG, etc for fiddling with vin conversions & bins as needed and MINOR decoding of car configs within the bins.
I'm also into CAN hacking, sniffing. Have a fairly adequate hobbyist level lab for board level PCB repair, microscope, oscilloscopes, bench DMM, SMD reflow and removal stations, reballing jigs, thermal profile SMD re/de-soldering equipment, etc etc. You guys are no stranger to the tools of the trade....
My lab is a mess and unusable as of now but I hope to be able to clean everything up and get back to the usual solder fumes that were constantly rising from my bench soon! Both my Father and my Mother in law passed within 1 year of one other in 2023. It was sudden and unexpected in both cases. The Wife and I live in a small house so all of our previously empty space has been filled with countless boxes as we clean out the houses of sentimental things. My next project is to cut into & frame out the joists to install some fold down attic access stairs. Thank the lord for the empty space we have up there. Current situation of squeezing boxes straight up through the 2ft by 2ft access hole isn't working; being a large framed guy, I barely fit through it by myself.
Anyhow I was a pleasure to introduce myself to the community; even get a few things off of my chest here. Looking forward to becoming part of the community and shooting the sh*t with the guys & "lads" from across the pond!
Hope your all well and go easy on the newb "New England Yankee" when I do post!
