Hi all,
New member here from the UK 👋
I'm mainly into BMW diesels and I'm currently working on my 2009 BMW 123d (E81, N47D20 twin-turbo, 6-speed manual). It's on about 186k miles and it's currently off the road because the timing chain snapped. I'm in the middle of rebuilding a replacement N47 and swapping it on the driveway, so I'm very much hands-on whether I like it or not.
Current / planned setup:
I'm new to tuning. I'm starting to teach myself WinOLS, but I don't have a subscription, so right now it's mostly identifying map areas and then editing in HxD. I'm mainly interested in safe torque increase / drivability on the stock twins rather than “send it till it pops”.
Long-term I'd like to understand limiter structure on these N47s (torque limiters, boost targets, SOI/DOI etc.) and what’s realistically safe for them. I'm not pretending to be a tuner – I'm here to learn properly instead of just paying someone for a random file off WhatsApp.
If anyone here has experience with the 123d / N47 and can point me in the right direction for finding the relevant maps, I'd appreciate it.
Cheers.

Current / planned setup:
- Swirl flaps and EGR blanked
- DPF coming off once it's all back together
- Intake opened up a bit for more turbo noise
- Front-mount intercooler upgrade planned (haven't fitted it yet, looking at a bigger silver core)
- Aiming for a mild power bump and popcorn limiter without stupid smoke
- I still want decent fuel economy, not a rolling fog machine
