This is really turning out to be an extremely freaking frustrating episode trying to get dm500c to work.
Trying to follow the threads and history, do and donts was difficult enough.
I finally plug up the courage to try to flash using the router mode. Followed all the steps but the box just crashed my network everytime when it reboots. so i figured maybe i did something wrong, so i opted to follow the advice of the safest method.
Using "dreamup" and the null modem cable. So, I go out to buy a null modem cable. I bring it back home and find out that the female to female cable does not fit my "db9" port which is also female.
So back i go to the shops looking for female to male convertor. Finally, found a shop that has the convertor but I had to wait an hour for them to get it delivered from another outlet.
Happy , I figured the it will be worth my effort. Brought it home and tried to plug the "converted male" cable only to find out that it was a vga port on my computer I was trying to force the db9 pins into. Silly old me I thought, but where the hell is the freaking serial port on the comp??? there is none!! none of my three laptops and 1 desktop has it !! In this forum seems like everyone assumes there is one and nobody is warned before going out to buy a null modem even though It does tell to differentiate from rs232 serial cable
so nevermind i tell myself, since i am already so deep into it, why not I will buy myself a usb to serial cable. Found one and came back home to challenge my nemesis but again I cannot another wasted trip and money. Brought the box to the office and yeah found a old desktop with a db9 port. Plug it in and it allows to connect to com2. but the message in dreamup shows "connection prepared now switch on the dreambox"
It just stays this way - nothing on the log which i read at least ppl have a message "dm500 found" or s/t. Mine just stays like this without any activity. now copying of files no nothing.
What a bummer !!!! I wonder if anybody else has gone through the same frustration that i have been through
Not as easy as it appears

Reason: spelling
when you get the message connection prepared now switch on the dreambox, you basically need to unplug and replug in the power adapter and viola! it will werk!
can i ask how the internet image updates work? i currently got 3 dm500C boxes at home and another 2 at my dad's place so it can sometimes be a bitch to manually update each dreambox when my provider changes keys etc.
how do i serve my latest image up to each individual box? hope its not a noob question
just bought 1 set of DM500C,
everytime i on the decoder, i need to adjust the volume setting and the default channel. can anyone guide me for the volume setting and the last channel view.
Hi all just flashed this image on my dm5oo and have got nothing but no signal cannot even ftp to the box to change image. Anyone got any ideas wot to do thanx

Maybe you should have read the guides in depth. I have made a post to highlight the null modem cables and even a picture of the pins on it. Post #475.
VGA cable is 15-pins. You said you got a serial cable, have you made sure that it is null modem cable? It is different due to internal wiring. There are highlights in the stickies that not all computer has RS232 port, especially laptop. So if you have been through stickies, you would have save yourself wasted trip.
You probably switch on the dreambox before you click connect. The program does not work this way. You will have to leave your dreambox off. After you click connect, and it says connection prepared, then you on the box. So either your cable is a straight cable or you have on the box before connect. Just try it.

I think your box is dead. Since you can't even FTP which is what happen to me after a bad flash from telnet, you will probably need to get a null modem cable and flash via dreamup.
first impressions are superb
having moved over from the dbox scene i'm just getting into the dream box just had it delivered today
the only problem i have is uploading a good bouquets list
i'm familer with the linux system but it seems more complex than the dbox could someone point me in the ight direction

After you scan for channs. it doesn't take that long to create
your own bouquets. You can have them exactly as you want them
If you use someone elses chann.xml it usually won't be to your
liking. Back up your bouquets on PC & you will always have them.
No, you would need to find a cable-server for card/share, or look
at buying Kryptvu A780 or similiar LAN box which have servers
set up for card/share.
There are plenty of servers for Dream 500s on sattelite
