    enigma image /Kaos V1

    Hi,
I am totally new to the whole dreambox world and have a question about images. I just got a 500c and set it up correctly at home so no issue there. I think I am running an enigma image (ditigalworldz). My question is why would any body change their image to Kaos V1 if they had no issue with there old image. What dose Kaos V1 offer that enigma image dose not?

Without appearing to belittle the work of the developers, all the images are similar but different teams put different customisations. I use the Pli image because i like the 14 days epg they provide but which is not available from any other team. Some people find it easier to navigate round a particular image compared to another.

The DW have taken down their addon server so all the addons/plugins such as the cams Evocamd, Mgcamd etc will have to be done manually whereas the DK server is probably working fine. Until you have different images it is difficult to say which one is preferable but than sometimes the old adage 'if it ain't broke leave it alone' seems to apply.

if you dont have any problems then you personally dont need to change, but imgs move forwards and a lot of people like to change from one to another.

some people accept the img they have as it was on the box when they paid for it

some cant or wont learn to change an img.

some cant put up with garish boot up screens.

a new img might have a feature on it there old one doesnt.

one img might run well on one box but not on another.

just like cars you could keep your ford orion you had from new as it works ok or go buy a new car because you want to and its up to date.

Enigma is the base code that most images are based on, there are others, i.e. neutrino, lcars, etc.

As above, the different teams will add their own touch to the image and they will all have different functions and features.

The CVS (enigma source) is getting updated all the time with new features and bug fixes so newer images will always have these new updates.

But as above, if you're not great with flashing images, setting up services and bouquets, etc. then it's probably best if you just leave it as is.

But if you're an image whore and like to try them all when they come out...then by all means try them all! Just create a backup of your working image beforehand, then when it all goes tits up (and it will ) you'll have something to flash back to the box and you'll be up in running in 2 mins.

          Maybe later

I would like to try new images when I learn more about the working and in's and out's of Dreamboxes. At the moment my Db has a big glow around it saying 'Don't you mess with me, I'll make you pay for it'. Concerning backing up my old image. I have connected to my Db through Flash FTP and load keys etc. Whats the best way to make a back up with flash or is there any other tools which would be more back up friendly?

backup with dreamup and a null modem cable and you will get a good backup of the 500, just make sure when flashing/restoring a backup image when you flash with dreamup to select NO to flash erase after flash...
            boom!

Having a bit of trouble haaaaa! THis is going to take a bit of time to explain. I am running DW 2 and had approx 140 channels running. Everythings going great until tonight. The picture on the box stalls because I moved the box. This is OK because it happens right? so I unplug and plug back in the box to fix issue but then it happens. The box starts and it stalls at the DW logo. I can't get pass this point and I have no backup image (silly me) but I do have a Kaos V1 image. I flash the kaos image and happy days but not that happy. I can only get about 50 channels. I know on the DW 2 I can get 140 but on the Kaos only 50. why is this?
I love the kaos interface and its really classey, well done on design but I really want my 140 channels back. Where can I get a image of the DW 2 please? or is there any suggestions on the Kaos V1?

Makes sure you have the latest cables.xml and that you have done a full scan of the channels. You will also need to copy the AU fix once you have all the channels.

                      Hi lads,

                      I'm in a similar situation than Davidmull02, I have a dreambox 500c with a digitalwordlz image (1.6 I think) on it.

Anyway the box works fine and I get all the channels (about 150) on it. No problems at all, but I've been reading about all these different images and I'd like to try different ones.

I think I've backed up the image using telnet, following instructions I found on sat-industry.net, with the following command: cat /dev/mtd/3 > /var/tmp/backup.img [enter]. But how do I know that if something goes wrong I can restore this image and everything will be exactly the same as it is at the moment?

Sorry if the question seems a bit silly but I'm new to this and I'm just a bit nervous about messing around with the box

Unfortunately the only real way you can be absolutely sure that you have a good backup is to test restoring it.
