If the 500+ has got tuxbox commander installed on it, you could use that to edit the /var/etc/passwd file, and blank out the current root password. If not, then it is possible to alter the password by dumping a backup of the image and modifying it, but it's not easy. It's almost certainly better to just reflash with a known good image though.
