Stupid noob question-dm500c pickup FTA channels without a smartcard??

ok ive given up on using this box, no one else uses it in my country. Although i do populate all channels with and without cables.xml i cant see any channels. I can see program guide info though. all channels are black. tried all the cams/ images out there. :-(
nice box and good network functionality, but i cant watch anything on it!

do i need a subscription card to use this box????

ive found out that telstra uses nds encryption. and thats not hacked
