    FTP with DM500C-II

I wanted to do a backup of DM500C-II image. This is a special set up box and it is not possible to get its IP address using the same procedures as stated for DM500C. I patiently pinged DM500C-II using the dot prompt command and finally got a response at IP address 192.168.1.64 as follows:

Pinging 192.168.1.64 with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from 192.168.1.64: bytes=32 time=9ms TTL=127
    Reply from 192.168.1.64: bytes=32 time=12ms TTL=127
    Reply from 192.168.1.64: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=127
    Reply from 192.168.1.64: bytes=32 time=35ms TTL=127

    Ping statistics for 192.168.1.64:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 2ms, Maximum = 35ms, Average = 14ms

I input this IP address through a usb-serial RS232 converter and a null modem cable to DM500C-II using the fileZilla site manager menu. After establishing a connection, I got an error message: Cannot connect to server. Anyone knows what could have gone wrong?

According to the picture you posted previously. That don't look alike to DM500-C. A standard DM500-C use external power supply but your box seem to have internal power supply. I can't tell any other differences because I had not have chance to hand on that box.

What type of backup are you going to do? And why you need to? For DM500-C; For image backup, you can do it with Dreamup 1.3.3.4 or telnet command. If you are using telnet command to do a backup you need FTP transfer out the backup file. Further more you need to know the password to enter the box.

Dreamup use NULL Modem cable to communicate.
Telnet & FTP use Ethernet cable to communicate,

    Now back on your problem;
Is call "Command Prompt" or "DOS Prompt" not "dot command prompt".
How do you know that IP 192.168.1.64 is your dreambox?
If you are using filezilla, there must have more info rather than only "Could not connect to server"

Example 1 (below tell you that the FTP services is not running)
    Error: Connection timed out
Error: Could not connect to server
    ------------------------------------------------------------
Example 2 (below tell you that wrong ID or password)
Response: 530 User cannot log in.
    Error: Critical error
Error: Could not connect to server
    ------------------------------------------------------------
Example 3 (below tell you that the FTP is running with a different port)
Status: Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".
Error: Could not connect to server
    ------------------------------------------------------------

Lastly, are you having any problem with the box right now? If not, why you thing of backing up? Even you have successfully done a backup, are you going to try restoring to prove that your backup work? Later end up box cannot work how?

      Hi Arraysys,

Once again, thanks for your prompt response. You are one of the most helpful cable dreambox guru here.

      1. I intend to use dreamup with null modem cable to do an image backup, if it works, for the following reasons:
      • To recovery the system in case the software gets corrupted,
      • For someone who needs the latest update,
      • To recovery the system channels programme list in case a mistake was made in deleting the existing programme list. Yesterday, I have accidentally deleted 2 channels and now all the channels numbers have moved 2 numbers forward.

      2. I guess 192.168.1.64 should be the right IP address as this is the only ID that the black box has responded to the 4 test data messages sent without lost data package.

The complete log file messages from the fileZillae are as follows:

      Status: Connecting to 192.168.1.64?
Status: Connection established. Waiting for welcome message?.
Error: Could not connect to server?..
      Status: Waiting to retry?..

      3. I am using "root" as the user name and "dreambox"as the password. Maybe this is the wrong set.

In the first place, do you know how to use Dreamup software to do a backup or a flash?
Are you connecting the computer and the box with Ethernet cable to a router?
Don't guess for the IP, you can use a Netscan to to identify the box IP or are you able to check from the box setup menu under network.
Could that be your computer IP?
The filezilla error message seem like there are firewall blocking the connection.

I will try your recommendation to find the right IP address first. I can then use filezilla to access the file directory of this black box. Later, will try to do a image backup if this was flashed with dreamup software.

            Hi Arraysys,

I am not able to find the ip address through the menu/network method as this feature is not provided in this black box.

I manage to get a trial version of netscan software. May I know the procedures and connection needed for using netscan to find the black box's ip address?

For your information, there is no Ethernet terminal at the back of this box. Only telephone terminal is found.

That mean your box is not that box you posted. That box you posted does come with a build-in power supply, a Ethernet port and a modem port. Further more, I don't think you can use Dreamup or FTP software so forgot about backing up already.

The only different is that there is no Ethernet port in my box. Anyway, I will open up the box to check if the RS 232 port is physically connected with the mother board when I have the time.

                Thanks for your help.

                cheers.

That is not a DM500-C and it is also totally different. Since it doesn't come with Ethernet port then how you manage to get the box IP. That why I ask you how sure you think that is the IP of the box. I think better forget about the backup. If you want to do it buy a true DM500-C.

Your previous attached picture which link to the web, the back of the box is like this below that come with Ethernet port.

If it is not possible to find the black box's IP address through a null modem cable via the RS 232 port, then I should just stop here.

if i am correct, your type of box can only upgrade firmware thru the serial port with another same box model. One set to transmit and the older firmware set to receive.

if possible get a DM500C cost about SGD100 only.

DM500C-II info not shared by its manufacturer unlike the DM500C .

If your box does not have an ethernet cable, and you are using a null modem cable, it is not possible to connect using an IP address.

IP addresses only work if you have an ethernet port; null modem cable is connecting using com ports; which is a totally different communications protocol altogether.

The 192.168.1.64 is most likely another device or computer on your network; receiving a ping back from it just means the device is alive and connected to your LAN. However, that device is not likely to be your DM500C-II.

If you only have the RS232 port, then I believe your only option is DreamUp and not FTP.
