Managed to get the lid off by trying several different screwdrivers (again, this is a first for me) and can't believe what I'm seeing.

It's absolutely cram jam packed full of dust, there's a massive ball of fluff and the whole 9 yards! It's absolutely disgusting. Careful cleaning job required!

Well, that looks like it's done it! Result!

Fergal, plasterer; I can't thank you enough for your help on this issue. I've learned quite a bit this last few days and feel vindicated now for sticking with it!

Not going to count my chickens just yet, will see how it goes for the next few days. Thank you again though, I really, really appreciate it!

The above means the SEC chip is ok for now
there could have been a bit of crap on the SEC chip legs causing it or a dry solder joint on the legs somewhere if it happens again check the boot log for the error if it reads

Given the amount of grime in the box it must have been having some effect. Dusting the legs of the chip just wasn't an option, the entire contents of the box was entirely coated with dust and detritus.

I'm quite hopeful that's cracked it but, as you say, I'm not going to do anything with it now!

If it's a Nokia, then it's a good idea to remove the telephone modem board and bin it. This results in less work for the PSU to do (therefore less heat output from there)- and also allows a better cooling flow of air around the tuner can, positioned right alongside it.

              Cheers- AL

I deffo wont have all the relevant tools etc required to do it but will have a look at it all the same. TBH that's probably a bit beyond me as things stand but a week ago getting the box working was beyond me, so never say never!

A screw driver and a sharp pull will remove it from the box

Take the screw out of the modem on the backplate slightly loosen the tuner screw
then just gently pull the backplate away from the tuner a little bit then just pull the modem out like you do with a pc card then tighten the tuner screw up again

Sounds simple enough. Will have a look at it in the coming days, feeling quite chuffed with my efforts so I'm off for a couple of beers!
