At the back of your box make sure your cable feed is plugged into the RF in and not the ANT.

Factory Default, then reboot the box, go to Menu, Installation, User installation, powerscan (yellow button)

    Start--100.00
    Stop-- 850.00
    Sym--- 6887
    sym----0000
    Sym----0000
    Sym----0000
    Step 8
    Fav Whatever suits you.

    Ok to scan.

when I did my scan, I did it with the splitter and was surfing at the same time. would the picture be even better if I did the scan with the cable directly connected?

No not really, I don't see a difference. Some say you should scan from the main feed though.
