Thanks to everyone that helped out , managed to get it done at last, I tried old laptop with a 9 pin port like badapple 
said and bingo it worked first time.
I guess the problem was my serial to usb lead, the driver or something along those lines even tho it did say the driver was correct
anyway after all this time I'm back up and running and can't thank you lot enough
