That is very odd. My friend disconnected from vm a few months ago and I was the one who called. I asked them when they would come for the box but the lady at the other end said they don't collect the box and for me to just bin it!
If they do come looking for it, they better go to the nearest tip

I really would not worry about it,usually a appointment is made to collect TV equipment from customers who cancel their subscription, however sometimes this is left and gets put out to a guy who has a list of people then goes round collecting boxes (TV) only, modems are never collected.
Only possible issue is you may have a disconnection TAG put on your drop cable in either the cab or the pit whereby a crew will follow up for maintenance purposes and disconnect you from the network to ensure no signal ingress/egress as you would have a feed leaking signal as it's not terminated.
One thing for sure you are not in anyway obliged to let anyone in your home, just a polite "wait a second i will get it" would have been quiet acceptable in this situation.

you DO NOT have to let anyone in your door without a warrant....if anyone knocks and asks to come in without a warrant tell them to ~~~~ off.

i've worked for the cable company's in the past, doing disconnections, and i'd say 99 times out of 100 customers always just give the box at the door step, its acceptable to do this and no body should worry about leaving the man outside while you go and get the box,vm/ntl what ever you want to call it seem to always change there policy on decoder returns, one person tells you to throw it in the bin and yet another person comes to collect it two days later or even 12 months later, its just bad management.
if the drop cable to the house is isolated then any ingress from the box should be stoped at the ob,and as there is no return path it should be undectable at the dp/rt(green cabnet).

                              my m8 worked for nthell

he told me many engineers simply remove the tags off each cable, re wire them so know one knows where they go so no one can get disconnected without someone spending a few days testing where each cable goes....

this is NOT a hint how to bypass dissconections

Re wire them? to what? If the cable is re wired in the cab, pit or dp (area dependant) then that would make no difference what so ever....if the cable is disconnected from the customers house, "so no one knows where they go" (as you say) their equipment wouldnt work at all They dont need to look at tags, to identify where a cable goes, even though it CAN make things easier, most tags are on the wrong cable anyway...the reason for this is, engineers in a hurry, just tag ANY cable so they can get to the next job quicker. so im confused by your post???????????????????

Also, are you saying that overworked, underpaid engineers go round doing what you say, free of charge? cant see why coz it wouldnt do ANYTHING at all. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm very curious
