    New Samsung V+ Details

Details of the new Samsung V+, including pictures, taken from another forum.
The main differences appear to be the removal of Component, Phono, RF and eSATA connections, OSD and subtitles on the VCR Scart, an exhaust fan at the rear, the ability to record radio, a message when watching a HD channel on an SD connection and only being able to watch what is being archived during the archiving process.

Something interesting has come of this, on page 25 there is mention of a 'NGTV' and 'NGCAS' being tested in Kirklees, Leeds and Barnsley as a part of a UK5 code drop.

It was previously announced that in 2009 and 2010 Virgin would be "moving to next generation TV (NGTV?), next generation conditional access systems (NGCAS?)."
Cable - News - Virgin 'to replace TV platform' in 2009 - Digital Spy

A Virgin employee, has said that these will be the test regions
"The three areas mentioned looks like will be the test for the Next-Gen Platform.
P.S. NOW will people start believing me when I said that Virgin will be doing something about the Pirates "

Jasmeet dont think anyone had any doubt that VM would upgrade the platform. It was a matter of when not if this happened. What was total bollocks was the nonsense that was being spouted by some that so called "operation santa" was going to wipe out the boxes in December 2008 then it moved to February 2009. Neither date was ever going to be possible.

Said it before that it might, for a minority, be next santa but imo for the overwhelming majority it will be 2010.

Enjoy it while it lasts. Certainly not losing any sleep over this.

I went into work today telling them that i had see one online, and guess what, they had one. Apparently there is 3 of them in our building, So we set it up...

The box show big improvement, Much faster. PVR playback FF>RWD etc much smoother. Its alot better, few good improvements. I noticed they have moved the grill holes from top and sides, and added the fan. It seems to keep it really cool. And the fan is quiet too. on the note of sound, the harddrive seems quieter too.

I will try get more info tommorow

At least this new box is a lot smaller than the current v+ box

                  Thanks

Thanks for the Samsung 3110 details file which I'm about to download. Hopefully it will explain how to switch from HDMI to SCART mode without having a HD TV attached. I know how to do this on the old SA V+ using the front panel but the 3110 front doesn't have pause/play and stop buttons. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Q: How do I set the V+ output to HDMI? I've tried but it keeps going back to SCART.

A: There's a knack to this. After you've selected HDMI output from the Settings menu, the box does a test to make sure you really can see HDMI. Note: You need to press the 'Text' key on the remote during the test, otherwise it will revert to SCART output after a few seconds. This is to try to stop you accidentally putting the box in HDMI mode when you haven't got an HDMI telly - but see below if you still manage!

To make things easier, the software has been changed to detect when you have plugged in an HDMI lead, and guide you through the switch-over process. You still need to press the all-important Text key, though.

V+ HD box Optical audio out

I get one installed next week and have been looking for pictures of the back of it to see the connections. The pictures I have seen don't seem to to show the Opitical Audio out?

i have one of the older models, from the day of setting it up i noticed although you can change from 720 to 1080p the picture stays at 720 and cannot transmit in 1080 i was in contact to virgin just two days of them fitting it stating that hd is HIGH DEF not medium def as i see 720p and all they could say was tough that is the box we supply, now i see samsung 3110 is available i have contacted virgin to ask if this is 1080p and they said they will get back to me about it, that was over a week ago! i am going to ring again in the morning to find out. what hi-fi has done a bit about the box but does not say if 720 or 1080? nor does the pages in the download spec, it states that you can switch from 720 to 1080! that does not mean it transmits in that, i know the difference due to having a freesat reciever in 1080p and the picture quality difference between both is amazing
i will let you know what virgin say if i can ever get an answer

i think you will find mate that the highest setting that is broadcast is 720p-1080i. you can upscale a 720p to 1080p through the box (correct me if wrong as only had my box a week) and the picture quality is great .

i am not saying you are wrong, but for me the proof is in the seeing, i compare the v+ box to technomate 9600 hd pictures the difference is amazing, i spoke to virgin technical department about the v+ box the lady who answered knew nothing? i could bearly understand her accent (asian)and she was the same with me nomatter what i asked she kept replying with, is the box faulty? in the end i said yes so she replied with i will send an engineer to repair or replace the box, maybe just maybe i will find out how good this box is cause i will let him replace it if he offers
