It was never free as such, but yes this is the way they plan to keep it.

i notice that you always have to provide your box number..
IS THIS SO THAT THEY CAN CONTROL YOUR BOX??

It acts as an account number on their server, so yes it's a way of tracking payment and length of sub, etc.

They are not the only ones which can pull the plug as you say.
