    Starview 4 is dead

Hi,I updated my starview 4 from 1.07 to 1.10 and it went ok however when I switched it on the next day nothing...no numbers coming up zilch.I have a jtag I bought a while back to fix another box when it showed the dreaded 8882 but when I opened up this box the plug on jtag won't fit anywhere so I fear I have a clone. The big question is does any of you kind souls out there know how I can reload 1.07 on this box or is it knackered for good?It makes a click on the telly when I switch it on and that's all no numbers nothing please help, thank you in advance.

It is not a Jtag that you require, it is a Max232 Interface take a look here Tailor-Made Circuits

When you get the Max232 interface it will come with instructions. But if you have any problems please post back here.

AHHH thanks Satsmo... just one final question before i invest in one of these Max323.... just to make sure im doing the right thing...

I brought a starview 4 usb from a dealer... i installed the v1.10 on it. Worked a treat for a few days.. then said "warning ths is an invalid box!!"... so i thought ah turn it off - turn it on again should fix it... turns out it killed it!! Now no lights or anything... i know power is going to the box coz i have one of them volt sticks that light up...

will buying the max323 allow me to solve my problem? I have tried contacting the dealer but will continue trying and if no joy then will have to buy the max323.

Also can you tell me how i can detect a clone box?

Thanks so much and sorry for all the quesitons.... i seem jinxed!!

The Starview 4 clones have a heatsink on the CPU look through the grills if you see a silver heatsink, then you have a clone. The clone SV4 processor requires a heatsink.

A Max232 will allow you to fix the bootloader and reflash. If you are in the UK reflash with 1.07 afterwards. If you are in Ireland you will need 1.10 but as this kills clones not of much value to you, only way is get hold of the supplier.

Please tell us who the supplier was?

Thanks for the speedy response Satsmo...

Supplier was FalconSat - | Falconsat.co.uk | Falcon International Satellite however ive only tried calling him for two days (and as its weekend he could be away... i will continue trying for a week and see if i get any joy!)

Is there any huge difference between a clone and a real one? what are the advantages of real over clone and is there a good trusted place to buy real? My one is a clone (i can see the heatsink) although the supplier did tell me it was an original...cheeky sod!!

So you think v1.10 killed my clone... if i get the max323 will this make it all better again? i forgot to say im in london if that makes a difference

                  thanks again! x

I never had any dealings with that supplier. But as you said its the weekend lets see what happens when business opens on Monday. Some suppliers also get clones without their knowledge so can only give benefit of doubt until Monday.

I am sure if you direct them to this thread they will help you out They should replace it for you with a genuine model. Regarding the UK if there is a hit and you require a firmware fix it will not work on this box so hopefully they will look after you.

I do not recommend sellers but if you look around there are quite a few people and threads here that will have the info you need. The Max 232 will work but only worthwhile as said if you are UK based. Either way try the supplier first for a replacement.

Surprising enough I also see they sell the Max232 interface so are aware of the flashing problem and must be aware of what they sell

Let us know how you get on please.

I have checked up on them and does not sound too good. However it is based on a few calls I just made and as I have not dealt with them before so will reserve judgement.

Google this exact string "Falconsat, The trials and tribulations of" and it will tell you one or two things

                            OH OH :O

thanks guys...this does not look good... but saying that, in FIS's defence, the first box i brought from him had a faulty display and he changed it... the replacement had an issue with scart and wouldn't display the picture so i called him and he changed it for this one... his website does say "limited phone service till 30th June" so will keep trying and see what happens... I really hope he does help and at least then he can clear his name in peoples bad books.....!

Will keep you all posted... thanks again!

Hi Ganganmail... welcome to the thread!

I was very new to all this and am thinking of setting up a "MUST READ BEFORE YOU BUY" guide to starview 4 as i have learnt so much from these guys that i whished id known from the beginning!

From what they tell me - if you have a clone you will see a silver heat sink on top of the processor through the vents on ur box. Clones don't like v1.10 and it makes them die - u may have got a message saying "warning invalid box!!" on ur screen before it died.

Worst thing to do is turn it off...(this is what most pc users think like when something doesnt work - the old turn it off - turn it on again!) i think best thing to do when this message shows is reflash with v1.7 asap! Dont know if this helps but im sure someone can tell us on here.

With clones i believe only v1.7 works well. Anything above will not work for long. If your seller advertised the product as a genuine and its a clone (silver heat sink on processor), then you can ask them to replace or refund. It is worth reading reviews of dealings other people have had with sellers before buying from them - some seem less helpful then others when thier product goes wrong.

As far as i can tell from what the other guys have told me - there is no cure for a dead clone on v1.10. You can use a MAX232 (a type of cable) and a computer to reflash a dead box that is original but i believe this wont work on a clone. Again please correct me if im wrong somebody!!

Hope that helps buddy.... look at me...a bit of an expert!! hahaha!
