I know it's a clone

I said at the start of the post that it's a clone that's the problem...my advice is stay away from buying boxes from ebay as they are all snide clones on sale on there in my opinion that's why they are so cheap,if you have not noticed already it's awash with starview 4 boxes which are all clones,again it serves me right and I will have to take the hit but to anyone buying one of these do not upgrade your firmware to 1.10 if you have bought a clone box as it will knock it out,cheers.

Sorry buddy ...my bad... think somewhere on this thread it does say you cant flash clones even with the max232... anyway if i get any luck with FIS i will let you know. i think DVBmokeyuk is offering real boxes for a good price... worth a look!

You can flash the cloned boxes - it's just a pain in the butt.

I managed by trimming the plastic off the edge of the connector on the mainboard and the Max232, and you can get a connection that way with perseverance. A more successful approach was holding the side of the Max232 (where you can see the copper connectors) down on to the pins and keep holding in this position while you get it flashed.

The other problem that I had was that I couldn't get a flash using a USB to serial adapter - had to dig out an old Win 98 laptop to get the stuff to flash.

In terms of reliability, it has been OK as long as you don't mention the word USB in front of it - it only has to suspect you are going to insert a flash-drive and it throws an 8882 and back to re-flash.

My advice - get it flashed using the Max232, turn it on without any USB device in it, and don't touch it again (at least until the Lions' tour is finished).

Hi my cousin has got a starview4 box its not cloned cos it hasnt got the silverthing on the mainboard, he tried to update it with the v1.10. firmware and the message ''this box is invalid'' showed up, the box then went off and did not come back on, power is going into the box as i can see a red light, i have tried sorting it with the max232 using the v1.07 and the v1.10 firmware but still it is not working, is it safe to assume the box is beyond repair? or is there another way it can be sorted?

Update on FIS.... So i called the guy (nice chap) and he said he wasn't aware i had a clone. It was an old batch of boxes. He is expecting a new shipment in on monday or tuesday and says they are the real deal.

So far i have to say that although FIS have recieved some bad feedback, i personally have had nothing but good service from them. Everytime i've had a problem (sometime i have called about 11pm!) he has answered and been polite and helpfull.

Will keep you posted on the new box and how it works!

Hello people... picked up my new starvew 4 the other day from FIS. This time he assured me it wasn't a clone and that i should go ahead with v1.10 with confidence! just set it up and so far so good.... will keep you posted on developments.

FIS have had a rather bad name to date... i have seen the stuff people have written. I have to say that they have been very helpful to me so if you have brought from them and are worried - just call them. They changed my box over without any quesitons!

However i do have a quesiton for all you experts - what is the difference between TW, NTL, EX C&W, CHAOS and the other one? I know what each one stands for...but im in a Virgin media area and when i use EX C&W i seem to get more channels then if i use TW (which is what it was before virgin in my area!)

Anyone able to shead any light on this thanks so much!

woud help if we knew where you are...but in s/manchester,which was nthell, now vermin;can scan with t/pest or xc/w.. get all main channels but slight diferences on some. ynwa

look in through vents do u see a heatsink on chip ,thats a clone,read back a number of posts for answer.sorry to say u will not get a clone to work in irl on n*l,as you need v1.10 which is a clone killer,fixed boxes will only work in uk on older firmware v.1.07
