starview 3 from ireland to uk

    Hey all,

I'm new to all this so please bear with me, I have a few questions.

I've just got a Starview 3 box off a mate in Dublin. As I'm sure you know nagra3 has been rolled out there making the boxes all but useless, but I'm hopeful I can get it working here in Plymouth.

So I plugged it in and did a scan under the 'TW' provider. It says it got 300 odd channels but they all had $ signs beside them and i couldn't get anything sensible out of it. Also stuck on updating data when I left it on S*y Sp**ts 2. The boot version is 8.0 when I check on the settings.

I figure I need to flash with updated firmware (and partly this post is to get access to that) but there are some problems here. I don't have access to a windows desktop outside of work. My laptop is Linux but I don't want to shell out for a RS232 pcmcia card until I know I can actually get this working. I might be able to get access to a friends PC but so far no-one I've asked has one with Windows and a serial port.

That's the background, here are my questions:

    1. Theoretically can this work if I get the right firmware installed (I have VM in the Plymouth area.)?
    2. Is there any way to get the box flashed with Linux (maybe through Wine)?
    3. Once I have it flashed, do I need to worry about cable provider codes, inputting keys, etc.? Or is it just a case of turning EMU on and letting it do it all automatically?

Sorry about the length of this, I've been doing plenty of reading round but I'm far from clear on what the state of the nation is regarding getting access to sports channels with this box. Any info anyone can provide would be great.

Basically yes it will work with the latest UK firmware on it, this can be found in the download section, the cable you need is a rs232 cable & a usb to serial adapter, I don't know about linux but I'm sure someone else will advise. You will need to go into secret menu (menu 1570) turn emu key to on then press ok on set default key, exit to a $ channel & wait for update, If you have any probs come back and we will soon get you up n running

Sorry I should have mentioned that I did that this morning, left it for 20 minutes and it still didn't get past the updating data box (gets to 140% then goes back and starts again).

I repeated it just there and same thing. Happily I now have access to a windows machine via my neighbour and I have the correct cable and the exe downloaded.

Also should have mentioned: I went to this link
        Starview Firmware [page 8/42]
to try to determine if my box is a clone or not. The number of vents is inconclusive (I have 20x7), the users manual suggests it is genuine, the remote control suggests it's a clone and I haven't opened it to check its internals.

What are the cons if I flash it with firmware for a genuine box?
I read it could fry the CPU. Is that true? Could I get away with just plugging it in for the matches I want to watch and just using the VM box for day-to-day use? Does firmware exist for clones?

(Sorry for the annoying questions and thank you for your responses)

also, I'm presuming I don't need a usb/serial port adapter or a serial port pcmcia card if I actually have a serial port on my machine. Is that right?

That's right, also I don't think the sv3 was prone to cloneing, only something I've read !! good luck

                cheers mate

for anyone else reading the post just says that there was no clone-killing software introduced for the starview 3 so the risk with installing f/w version 8.04 is minimal, although as a user you take the risk.

Still don't know if the box is a clone or not but I guess I don't need to worry either way unless clone-killing f/w comes out in the future.

                  OK we're getting there.

Flashed successfully with my neighbour's windows box (I could do a linux version of the software if the writer of the code wanted).

Connected it up, the data got updated and I got SS1 pictures but no audio. Played around with my remotes trying to get it working but no joy.

                  - Reset to factory settings (i think; entered 0000 in the factory settings thing anyway)
                  - menu, 1570, emu on, hit OK on default key
                  - back to SS1
                  - data updated
                  - still picture but no audio

Is this a known problem or am I being an idiot?

checked scart, still no sound on any channel

also, same scart works with VM box so pretty sure it's not that

Tried both options, no joy. Also tried both NAR and eng under the audio settings but neither work. After a google I also found a suggestion to change the modulation under user settings but none of the options worked. I'll give the phono outputs a try to see if they work but I don't have the right cable just now.

                          So close!
