Forget the rumors about the Iphones... People don't even know if the next phone will be the Iphone 5 or Iphone 4S. One thing is certain, if Apple were looking at software updates rather than hardware they are well behind Samsung, HTC & even Motorola who are all releasing phones with 1.2Ghz dual core processors.

Top of the pick is the Samsung Galaxy S II. 1.2Ghz dual core processor, 1GB system memory, 16GB or 32GB storage memory & micro SD support to 64GB. Built in gyroscope instead of motion sensors, full 1080p HD video recording at 30fps, Satnav & some really nice hardware developments.

Top end HTC handsets are also well worth looking at, if only for the build quality which puts Samsung to shame.

It may be better if you have a look at what your network has that interests you, then post us the list. Everyone has different idea's on what makes a good phone. All we can do is tell you the good & bad points of each phone, at least we're not just trying to sell you crap.

i got iphone4 jailbreaked it and never looked back
trouble with the question you asked is that iphone freaks will slate the galaxy, android nutters will slate the iphone, etc etc
what do you want the phone for ? calls and sms ? if so dont bother with a smartphone,if you want mobile internet wifi etc get one, personally i think android and iphone will all do the same things really as good as each other, advantage of the iphone is jailbreaking,,

But you can root the android if you want to achieve the same thing.

TBH, as you say they can both do the basic stuff very well.

i know i posted re this a couple of months ago when i thought i could upgrade 3 months early instead of 1 month early and it seemed like iphone vs android. i should say i dont really use my phone for the internet - i have a pc and a netbook for that so its just really for texts and calls and maybe occasional internet use.

i know its bad timing re iphones as the 5 is due out soon. on reading the reviews etc i do like the htc's.

lainie it sounds like most of these phones are a bit over the top functions wise and price wise for your needs, perhaps you would be better of with a very basic phone and basic minutes and text deal.

^^^ This. Ask on freecycle as well, people may have old basic handsets that they may give away then you only need a sim.

oh god know i dont want some old thing but equally i cant justify ?50 a month for a mobile contract. i cant use my phone at work so dont need full internet access. some internet access will be useful to maybe check cinema times etc.

not sure what improvements the iphone 5 will have on the 4.
