    Young feral pigeon

    Hey,

I have a young feral pigeon thats too young to fly. I had to take it as it was in my place of work and we have a cat who patrols the grounds keeping the furry population in check. I know most people would have left the pigeon to its fate, as they're considered pests, but i just could let the creature die such a brutal death. So I now have a young pigeon.

My questions are to people who know about such things:

Is there any point attempting to care for the bird?

Will it eat? Or will it only accept food from its mother?

    What will it eat?

Its quite big, but definitley young and unable to fly. How long before it finds its wings.

    Thanks for any advice.

alway a point attempting to save a creature, everything deserves a chance. i saw a wren getting a slap of a car outside the house a couple weeks ago. picked him up dazed and confused but nothing broken. dribbled some water into his little beak and kept an eye till he recovered. off he went. feelsgood.jpg

heres a post in a pigeon forum about raising them

unfortunately youve maybe done the wrong thing mate
the mother and father can still feed the fledgling till it can fly whilst it stays on the ground

but again try to put it higher up away from the cats reach (if that's possible) and it might get fed by its parents again
but keep an eye on it and if it looks iffy
feed it yourself add water to some grain and maybe a few worms
and feed it that if its hungry youl have no problem in feeding it
      hope it is ok mate
Today is the Tomorrow you worried about yesterday ......Was it worth it ?

Kill it and kill it now.
They are nothing more than flying rats. They carry all kinds of disease and nasties. You are in danger of picking up a resporitry disease by handling/being close to it.

I am not cruel or an animal hater. It's just fact.

Unfortunately, keeping the bird here is simply not an option. Its not just the cat. This is a bus depot, so the thing would surely get squashed. I also work with a few sadistic, sick bastards who would kill the pigeon, or feed it to the cat for their amusement, in a heartbeat. Im hoping it wont take long for the bird to take flight. If it starves or dies by other means, at least i did what i could for it. I would hope if i was ever in such a vulnerable position, someone or something would help me out too :-)

Adult pigeons eat seeds and corn, maybe you can squish up some seed with water and make a runny, semi hard mix and try dribbling that into it's beak ,
            Good luck with it,

hey mr Fug i wasn't having a go at you
i was just telling it like it is
these birds sometimes live on the ground for a few days till they fully fledge
blackbird young do a similar thing
its just a case that the parents will feed it till it can fly

also feral pigeons will and can eat almost anything
including jalape?o peppers from the bin
so feeding it isnt a problem

just stating that if left alone its parents will find it
also you could ring the RSPCA they will take it till it fledges and flies

I revived a pigeon many years ago that couldnt fly... it used to sit on top of the rabbit hutch and would eat all the crap that the rabbit through out of its bowl.. it took about 3 months and it was gone..

The diference being mine broken its wing.. and was an adult..

If im correct, the mother would feed it worms and insets.. sooooo water your garden and the worms will come to the top ..

Have fun its an experiance, some days you would want it dead because of the crap it drops and others your happy it starts to explore and practice flying.

heads up tree huggers this is the last time i will post in this thread as you are going over the top.

this pigeon will not learn the basic pigeon skills from some random irish bloke, and will therefore struggle to survive in the wild. therefore leading to a long lingering death.
if your some kind of keyboard hero who knows nothing about the subject, but just likes to jump on the band wagon and abuse someone, then up yours.
if your some one knowlegable about the subject, and i dont mean david attenborough, then post away with answers that will benefit 'walter'(the pigeon).
i dont kill everything as suggested, only people who pointed guns at me. i dont run round the countryside at weekends smearing myself in sparrow blood and eating raw wildlife.
what i said is factually correct, do some research.

wood pigeons are probably what you are getting mixed up with. feral pigeons are flying rats.

                            enjoy your non sustantiated abuse.
