Surely drilling for oil and finding billions of barrels of the stuff must be a good thing for the ailing economy..

People need to step back and look at what they've got, albeit ireland is in serious debt..

Imagine what the money could bring.. wealth, polish and an invasion.

Hear in Ireland we got more coal then Russia but who wants to buy coal when the countries are smoke free!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only solution good for the country is to come out of the EU.

The fumes from coal burning can be cleaned before released into the atmosphere. the government in the UK is building coal powered power plants.. using this technique.

trust me Kalipo, if there is oil there it will be pulled out and the money will go to Shell or some other shower. maybe the crumbs will be thrown at Paddy to shut him up.
better off leave it there till the revolution is over and the profits can go to the people....

With the ecnomy as it is & Ireland on the brink of being bankrupt, would it not make sense to dig for the oil, in return generate billions ??? in revenue?

I am sure the Gov. will be rubbibg their hands & counting the ???s that are going to be rolling in.

If there IS oil there, who do you think the Gov. is going to listed to... a few hundres peeps or the giant oil companies, who have more money than the Gov. itself.

And in all fairness & from a personal point, if it menas I will be paying less for my petrol/diesel then go for it... DIG!

sorry m8 but times are hard.

i'd be all for it Badapple if i thought it would generate substantial bucks for the economy but thats not the way it works. it will profit oil multinationals (and maybe a few politicians ) but i can guarantee you one thing, fuel prices wont come down by one red cent if there is a find.

all we'll get is the clean up bill when things go wrong.....(it wont be a tax though it will be an Environmental Reinstatement Charge )

it wouldn't benefit the irish people, as the irish goverment saw fit to give away our oil and gas rights a number of years back. So all the big multinationals pay is 25% corporation tax, and they also get plenty of grants and tax breaks.

so what grizz said is correct, any oil spills and we pay for it, but it's of very little benefit to the irish economy. and it certainly doesn't mean cheaper fuel.

It will generate substantial money for the government because of the tax...the multinationals make billions and your government would get 25%...it should be like UK government and get a headline tax of 62-80 percent tax, although that does stop them from drilling so much and they move elsewhere...like ROI where it is cheaper tax.

As for petrol price reductions, That I totally agree with you on..not gonna happen because of this.

As for spills, the government and tax payers are not responsible for any spills, the companies are solely responsible.

Your economy is in a mess (like most are) and they need new revenue......would you prefer they raised personal taxes or corporation taxes which would stop companies investing or just staying there.

Some times you have to except what you don't like for the greater good.

they get to write off 100% of their costs before they pay a penny in tax, and they don't pay any royalties. so the irish people will see very little money from it.
