Basically the same as any oil company setting up new projects, governments allow them to deduct their costs 1st and they pay tax on their profit, that doesn't mean your government get nothing...they still get 25% of the profits.

As for royalties...you cannot blame the multinationals for the stupidity of your government, they sold it off and with the oil/gas price so high, the oil companies would drill in your street if they found substansial oil.

Personally...I think the petition should ask the ROI government to raise the tax on oil/gas...just like UK gov did and have a fall back rate so if oil/gas dropped to a certain amout, then the tax drops aswell. If the multinationals didn't like this, then they can go elsewhere.

When Ireland gave their rights to the oil away did they give it for free or for a fee? If for a fee, they've pretty much sold any rights to complaining away.

in an ideal world, Jaffa, but im sure like many other business' the oil companies will pad their costs with creative accounting and the people of Ireland will end up short changed as usual.

then any profit that is seen will be used to pay off banking speculators from other countries instead of putting a few nurses into the empty hospital wards around the country.

i would agree with you re. the tax. im not sure the low rates create all the jobs the government say they do, then again i dont believe much of what my political masters say.

yeah they sold the rights (30 pieces of silver if i remember), but i still have the right to complain, cause i never voted for Fianna Fail. they didnt have my mandate to sell my oil.

Interesting article and the bit I found most interesting was this.

The question for the next twenty years is whether the people of Ireland will act or do our usual moaning when it?s too late to act.
The ball is now in your court, it seems the multinationals wiped your eyes, you lot need to TELL the government you want them to get a better deal and if the companies don't like it they can p1ss off, but with that amount of resources about plus future finds...its highly unlikely they will p1ss off.

Unfortunately whether people like it or not...we need fossil fuels and to get it, they need to drill in places that people may not like.

all very well to say Jaffa, but you should know as well as i do that neither your government nor mine give a good god damn what their people want.
the two main parties in ireland are essentially the same under differnet names. (i could also throw Labour into that mix cause they all eat at the same trough now)
there is no choice but to moan cause our votes means nothing here anymore.

At the end of the day it doesnt matter who owns the oil.. government or the oil companies..

The government will get the tax's and believe it or not the oil companies will need someone to work the rigs.. thus creating 1000's of jobs on and offshore..

Surely in a climate like this its better for the government to have hamsters working and earning money and paying tax's than having them sat in a pub all day drinking Guinness and claiming benefits??
