Have they asked you to pay the duty on it yet?, 'cos they will be.

You're importing something into the UK, off ebay or not, and HMRC might deem that there's duty payable on it. You can't just buy things from other countries for less and expect HMRC not to take an interest in you paying more for it (by giving them money), otherwise everyone would be doing it

Chances are they'll ask your courier to pay it and your courier will ask you for the money before they hand over the goods.

The limit when coming in from say the US was ?235 (it may have gone up lately) and cigs well 200 is the limit. Whether people risk losing it all by bringing more is entirely down to them and the HMRC officer on the day. That's people bringing stuff in when they return.

I don't pretend to know the full story, however HMRC always have had a rather strange remit, and the powers to go with it. I know when I buy stuff abroad I always try add 20% to the price, wonder whether it's worth it, and if it makes it in without HMRC grabbing me, well I have the 20% I'd put aside to drink with

thats a great plan but you could take it one step further,,don't buy anything and you would have even more to drink

If it doesn't say on the parcel what it is they will open it, and the courier will be in sh*t for not getting it labeled up before it left the US. It depends what the HMRC man thinks on the day should be the duty (if any), as I said strange powers, not forgetting that they will charge your courier who will add an admin fee of their own before they let you have your parcel.

Bringing in goods for personal use when you travel to the UK from abroad - types of tax and duty, duty free, EU and non-EU arrivals, banned and restricted goods.
