Question about employee right during this weather

Right, I took my missus to work in this weather (about 2 miles away), but was unhappy about picking her up. I said she shouldnt go in at all!

Anyone know what her rights are about getting home? I mean, I would rather go and get her now rather than wait another 4 hours so it can get worse.... she is on about walking home if I cant drive, but thats ridiculous!

Yeah lots about getting to work, and rights if you havent gone in. But nothing about rights when you are there, and getting home safely afterwards.

I dont know, they got the arse cos she was a little late in and were short staffed as only 3 people turned in...

Well I guess its hope for no accidents when I pick her up then!

The duty of care and HASAWA states that the employer must provide safe access and egress to and from the place of work. However, this just means within their premises / boundaries. It does not mean public highways etc.

As the boss in work, if I can get their I expect my staff to as well. Always being flexible and fair as well. If they cant, they should book a holiday or unpaid leave.

Yeah, getting there is one thing, getting home after a shift in this weather is another. The manager at store lives within a 2 minute walk, and doesnt have to drive.

It is what it is, and shall have to see what its like later!

Yes, getting to and from work is your own problem, although employers are expected to be sympathetic to employees during adverse weather conditions. However if you drive for work then HSE legislation does kick in and they have a duty of care.

Despite the cost of living, it's still very popular.

been reading trip advisor about hotel im staying at in march

they had freak weather half staff died trying to get to work for what probably amounted to 50p a shift

and guests were moaning about towels

we are lucky here yet we see ourselves as badly done too
