Fair play to your Missus if she was prepared to walk home. Too many lazy b@@tards would have looked for an excuse to skive.

I'd work on the principle that if there's cars and buses on the roads the weather isn't that bad that anyone with two working legs and self respect couldn't make it into work. That said if it's a business that relies on customers and good weather i.e A Golf Course I'd give my employees the day off.

It bugs me when they close schools due to a little snow, then you see the school grounds full of kids having a day off playing in the grounds of the same school. When I was a lad there could be 2 ft of snow and the schools still opened.

The health and safety at work act only protects employees at work. It is reasonable to assume that an employer will expect his workers to make a reasonable attempt to get into work. If there is no public transport available then I would assume it is unreasonable to ask workers to walk excessive miles in sub zero temperatures. Of course the matter could always be raised informally with management then taken to grievance.

This is solely down to the legal system... The school can't afford to clear the grounds, and when the inevitable minor injury does happen, people are seeing easy money through an injury claim

I think kids SHOULD experience danger, they are wrapped in cotton wool so much, the real world is a genuine shock to them!
