Weighing up cost of owning car against not owning a car

I am currently weighing up the cost of running a car, against the cost of getting buses and taxis whenever I need to go anywhere.

Its close.. So I wonder does anyone not own a car that used too, and how are you finding it.

I work nearby so can walk, and the missus can bus in and taxi home if needed. I am also thinking of using online shopping for food, and getting necessities from the local shop.

My car will fail the MOT, and needs a bit of work doing, so am not paying out anymore on it. So its coming to decision time very soon!

    Your thoughts woulld be appreciated.

Its coming to a stage like in 1950 only rich can have cars I think that time has come for me leg to work personally.

The other problem now is the car electronic you drive hear and there and the engine management light comes on, you add all that and you have no money left.

My opinion we will see horses back on our road in the next 10 years if it carries on like this and maybe the oil company will bring the petrol price back to 50p as gallon.
Tools owned: Hammer, Chisel, Crowbar, Punch, Chainsaw, Cutter and Brain!!!

Did you know People will question all the good things they hear about you but believe all the bad without a second thought.

If you can get away without it, then I think its a good thing, but not all people are in the same boat.
If I lived and worked in London where my only tools I needed for my job was a briefcase and a brolly, it would deffo go.. hiring one when needed for a jolly away at the weekend or whatever.
But if I was a plumber I would look a right tw*t on the tube with an eight foot copper pipe.
My job personally I couldn't get away without one, I carry tools and work different places all the time.
If you can do without masur do it.. one less car in front of me.

are you real m8, horses in 10 years, your living in the past . We all have a horse or 2 where i live , its much more reliable than a car, only cost about ?25 a week to keep, very rarely breaks down, can run in deep snow, doesnt need defrosted, and when they get too old helps make beef burgers for the next few month..

I tried not owning a car once. I was coming to the end of the lease on my company car and I'd just moved into the city, rather than being 20 miles outside. So I thought I'd do without. First day I got pi$$ wet through waiting for a bus. Second day I missed the bus when the driver decided to ignore me running at him waving my arms and he drove off. Third day I didn't have change for the bus and despite the fact that it was pi$$ing it down he wouldn't let me on.

Fourth day I bought a car. If you don't mind the inconvenience of public transport, getting wet as you have to walk, have to hire vans to move stuff around, carry shopping onto buses, or catch taxi's, not being able to go anywhere you want any time you want, then get rid of the car.

My commute to work is 100 miles each way, and there is no bus or train service. Me, I'll be keeping my car and motorbike until someone works out a way to make buses and trains omnipresent so that I can do all of the above anytime I want.
My master plan is to live forever..... going to plan so far
Despite the cost of living, it's still very popular.
            No good deed goes unpunished....

If you can quite happily walk to work and the wife is ok on bus or taxi's why not cars are a blessing and a curse you can get about when you want but wife and kids want lifts everywhere

Personally i hate being more than a day without car i dont think i could go back to not having one

but if your life allows it why not it will probably work out cheaper using taxi's buses for what you suggest it may be worthwhile for you

You will probably regret it a lot of the time but equally when everything is ok you will probably see the benefits

certainly wont do your health any harm

                  unless you get ran over

if you can get away with out one then i would do that, if you need one you can hire them for ?15 a day, just done a google, not read the small print so i suppose it will be more, but if say you wanted a week away, then maybe you could hire one, etc.

A lot depends on what you want out of life. It's one thing working out the cost of getting to work but for me it's a time saver and a lease of life. I could get by without a car but like to unwind in the countryside. A day up a big hill is like a weeks holiday. By the time I got a bus/train to within 20 miles of where I want it would be time to come back. Even if I was to pay for buses or hire a car it would work out more expensive. It's also handy to have outside the house for emergencies.

Add to this sitting on a bus with smokers that smell of a mixture of cat's piss and twiglets is enough to put me off public transport.

I would never give up my car cause a car equals freedom. I l know the leftys hate cars and are the reason we all pay so much for fuel. I know here in America a car is cheaper. Public transportation is a waste of money. It can't pay for it self so the government takes money from you to make it run. If you had to pay the real cost of taking public transportation you could own two cars.

An Emerican gallon is only about 3.78L meat

A real English imperial is about 4.54L
