Financially the two are very close. I was speaking with a friend the other day who doesn't own a car (I do) and it doesn't really bother him. He gets the tube pretty much everywhere, and get the overground when travelling to parents, the cost of which (?80 for two people return) prompted out conversation.

I personally couldn't live without a car. Mines already paid off (looking at getting a new one) so therefore its just the petrol (40 every two weeks) insurance, tax, MOT and extra little extras that are my costs. That being said, I do travel on public transport for work and it isn't terrible. But when going to a family members house and just going out, I'd much prefer to be in my car for the cost.

Do the sums and then work out if the saving of not having a car is worth the inconvenience. Given the cost of public transport I doubt the saving will be huge. Inconvenience will take many forms:-
          Waiting
          Freezing
          Unable to go places
          Carrying items
          etc etc.

Don't forget to factor in the extra cost of buying goods locally or having them delivered. If getting groceries delivered factor in that someone-else has picked that cauliflower and picked a tiddler or mangy one and the grief of waiting in for that delivery when you need to go out.
