If you got rid of both buttons, then it would only encourage more members to post their thanks instead, which would clutter up the threads.

It's annoying when you get an email notification that someone has replied to a thread you subscribe to, only to see that someone has posted "Thanks".

Understand what you are saying but don't see the comparison with facebook the like button is just away to show if you enjoyed a post or if it was really helpful

Looks like the 'Thanks' button has built bigger lead in the poll

Good as round here street cred is relevent to number of thanks received and given.

when the counters all were reset had to pay up slate at pub and off license had to borrow off vic till pay day

Bet paying off that slate cost a few ?'s

To be honest i don't mind which DF runs with ... i don't look at rep any more ... it means nothing ... a few members have inflated their own reps by banding together and clicking thanks on every post (they know who they are) i respond to each post on its own merit and after a while around the board you know who you can take the p*ss out of with out offending them ... like yourself

Democracy is a great illusion - I'm sure you are aware of that

I like both buttons tbh, as I said they have their own uses, people just have to get used to them and learn how to use them IMHO

but why have a vote if it means nothing

Because Devilfish wanted a vote. I see nothing in his OP saying he was going to get rid of either of them, unless I'm missing something in his OP. The other thing is, he does own the forum, so if he gets rid, or adds 30,000 more function is really his choice. It's a great board and I'd still be here if there were a dozen such buttons.

Monkeys press buttons, I come here to learn and help people.

I would think that Admin are having a chat about it over a glass or two of Shiraz .... i don't think 4 votes is a landslide.

Think Df has a lot on getting the forum into shape after the upgrade and will look at it when time allows

If monkeys press buttons, what type of animal (?) posts a 'thanks' instead of pressing the 'thanks' button?

I voted for both for the same reasons as have already been mentioned. But some people are beyond understanding what 'thanks' & 'like' buttons are for, so won't make that much difference to the forum.
