Cyber bullying, trolling & over protection

I've just been reading about Hanna Smith who committed suicide after being bullied on AskFM.

It was this report from the BBC web site.. Experts warn over anonymous question sites

Is it just me that can clearly see the problem here?

Kids don't need protecting from this bullying, they should be left to deal with it from the moment they go to school.

When I was at school, bullying was just part of the normal day. Everyone bullied someone. Name calling, excluding people from groups, fighting. Yet we never heard about kids offing themselves because they were called a fat, smelly, ginger.

The adult population in recent years have turned kids into over sensitive mental cases. Then blame the technology they don't understand & skinny images in magazines & adverts for the reason their anorexic, self harming child finally succeeded in something.

Ok, there are some harsh words used. But I can't help but say it as I see it.

Am I alone in my views?

If todays kids were left to fend for themselves there would be a lot less dribble about online bullying. How are these kids gonna deal with the real world when/if they start work?

You can't bubble wrap everything. This is also the same reason common sense is no longer common. Kids can't take any of the risks we did at their age. Ask a teenager this question... Can you jump off tower bridge & swim to the river bank?
I'm willing to bet they've seen something similar in the movies. So they will believe it can be done since they have no other reference material to show the dangers.

Stop trying to protect them & let them live for a change.

I'm with you on that one. People need to get a grip. Jeremy Clarkson summed it up when he highlighted he was one of the most abused people on the web. He just put it down to people with small penises needing to get a life. It's just natural selection in my book. Millions get abused and the odd one tops themselves. More people die crossing the road but we don't ban that.

      ON TOPIC:-

Cyber bulling is the 'best' around, no "he said, she said" word against word, clear as day save screen shot for use against them later.

Set up another account befriend them get their emaill address and then spamitback.com to them.

No if's no buts guilty or not guilty.

Just now one more skool place for some Polish kid to take

I see your point, but we never had to contend with the input of maybe several hundred or possibly thousands of trolls/bullies.our time to put it bluntly was more simplified, kids today have to deal with things we never envisaged,at twelve my only thought was could I climb every tree in our local park and how many birds eggs I could gather.talking to many teenagers and even early twenty-somethings today scares me with the amount of peer pressure they endure, esteem issues they have, and their attitude to life in general,i have to say I would rather be in my mid forties than mid teens in todays society.

I tend to agree with you Canker, we are definitely living in a nanny state to one degree or another.
My heart goes out to Hannah Smiths Family, but there must have been something else going on in that young girls life other than online bullying to make her take her own life.
All this talk of online bullying and its effects is all a wee bit beyond me though to tell you the truth.
To my way of thinking if you or I were getting constant abuse and hassle on a social media website.....Just stop going on it, find another to go on.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I do not know the answer.

No really is, we have a fantastic admin/mod team, who are normally on the case with in 5 mins or 15 months depends if bad posts are spotted.

How many times do you read about "Man arrested for vicious Tweets"

you never read in the paper "Member banned off DK for calling fat unemployed person, fat and unemployed"

I would suggest to much time on social media is a bad way to go about life, (Let hold up Meat as and example that shows the effects) surely there are more interesting things in life

I always thought bullying was like, when a kid at school tried to poke your eye out with a stick or nick your sarnies?

unfortunately, this thread is being discussed by an age group in a world that to coin a phrase "you don't understand" and we don't.

I agree with both gc and canker to an extent

In the case of Hannah it was anonymous site, without sounding harsh surely if something was bothering you that much you would just log out, but if you liked the site make a new identity and start again, seriously people need to manage their own lives at some point

but i can understand that things like facebook, it can get out of hand, people know each other and know their secrets. So if they fall out i imagine that it can get pretty intense, especially after everybody in your area and school find out that you were caught with your mums dildo up your Jax, that life can be a bit torturous

                            OBJECTION

'Social Media' is nothing more than going to the local park and chatting with friend, but on line.

                            Sites like "Tawtter" and "F@keb00k"

Digital kaos - the worlds best website is in a class of it's own where can you get news, sports, insults information, files, shout box in one hit other than DK?

Yes there is an INFERIOR website which was arond 10 years before DK, but it's clearly a copy of DK, so don't count.

Here on DK, you can stalk somebody quite easily, see their posts, which can be intresting/usefull if they replyed to a thread you missed.

As for" F@ke b00k " since been unfriended by the *HOT* bird from the parts place
and being blocked by various 'members of socitery' for various comments i left, what's the point.

Search feature no where near as good as DK, try it, you will soon be running back to DK

                            OFF/ON TOPIC:-

While I mostly agree with the op, gc also made a good point in that - if we were bullied it would be a one to one or a gang against one but with the hinternet it allows a far wider audience to view who is being bullied. Some of this can quickly go 'viral' among the kids ,who in my estimation (for what it is worth) are not of the same mental build as some of us older folk were as their age.
