An easy soloution would be to dual boot a system, between windows XP and Windows 7

Use 7 as your main operating system and XP when needed, not all copies of windows 7 come with XP mode so this is a viable soloution.

'tis free if you don't believe in copyright and that software should be as free as the water you drink (some may have to think about that). I do believe that up to version 2.0 of Windows was free - they struggled to even give it away I also recall Windows version 1.0. Thankfully all confined to the dustbin may years ago. I seem to recall Apple sued MS over Windows 2.0 they were that scared

Slight brainwave but i never knew that..! ha.. remember windows 3.1 on my machine.. got a japanese copy of windows 95 when it came out for a fiver! it was not the best idea on my machine.. 2mb ram, 500mb hdd and a 1x cd rom.. it was like shit off a shovel... ..

And as for the paid os for mac.. i paid ?8 for a legit update to mountain lion from the app store.. it was downloaded and imstalled without an hour!

With windows 8 i refuse to use it.. its built for tabs not full blown lappys and pcs..

windows 7 is where i stopped.. 8 will hopefully be a flop..

Cunny - MS never 'give' anything useful away and releasing WinXP source wouldn't be a very good idea knowing it's the most popular MS O/S ever how would they sell Windows 7/8 and soon to be 9 if everyone could continue to use XP. You also have to remember that with hardware manufacturers it's a rat race, they must rub their hands every time MS release a new O/S. MS's O/S's are full fo bloatware and always require a hardware upgrade to the average Joe in the street. What better way for MS and hardware manufacturers to ensure they both make more money, than new O/S's requiring higher spec hardware and new hardware requiring new divers in the new O/S? So don't hold your breath for anything useful to be give away by MS.

Apple on the other hand control *every* aspect of what they sell from hardware to O/S and software. Although they very rarely make a mistake they are, in my books, worse than MS. Sorry that's how I am. That's why although Apple will never dominate the computer market they make a profit, mostly because if you need to run an Apple application, you buy their hardware, you buy their O/S you buy software that they control - you're in a monopoly and they know it. Quite sad but true.

PC's on the other hand give much more freedom if you know what you want. You choose to buy whatever hardware you want, run whichever O/S you want (you can pay MS if you wish, or run Linux or any of the other O/S's you wish - yes there is more than MS Windows or Linux. You can then buy, or not in the case of open source, whatever software you want to use on your chosen O/S. The only way you pay is if *you* choose to. There is no monopoly and thankfully never will be. That is why PC 'compatible' hardware will continue to dominate the market.

Sadly for XP it will be consigned to the bin, MS can't wait for that to happen to help their profits and nor can the hardware makers. Sorry, but that's life.

Not entirely true. Ever heard of a HackinTosh?

My dad put a dual boot system together with Windows 7 & Lion. When Apple switched processors to Intel they opened the door to the hackers.
Apple's response was to stop anyone with a HackinTosh from buying software direct from Apple. D'oh! My dad has never paid for any Apple software, he just downloads ripped versions. Apple are losing a fair amount of money by not allowing hacked systems to purchase software.

Creating a HackinTosh is not easy.
