You WILL need to get a Electrician which is registered in the NICEIC domestic installer scheme to do any work on your house, as these are the only people who are authorised to work on your house ( By law ! ) electrics and also allowed to issue you with a completion certificate.....Most electrical alterations now fall into local building control by your local council. You can choose to get someone to do it as a "cash in the hand job, with no certificate given", but they probably are not registered with the domestic installer scheme, and if the council find out that alterations have been done without all the proper paperwork, you will be forced to have the work done again by a registered installer....personally, if you know what you are doing, do it yourself and say nothing to anyone.

Or you could just make one breach joint off a socket on your original circuit and send that single 2.5 t & e cable upstairs to a double socket...no need to break into your ring main at all. The IEE wiring regulations will allow you to connect one spur off each socket you have one the original wiring in the house. So if you have 5 sockets upstairs, you can attach a extra 5 double sockets to you existing sockets !! This is a very grey area regarding needing a test certificate, as you are not actually altering the original wiring in your house. we only issue test certificates if we alter the wiring or if we exchange a component etc...this could be your best option.if you can get hold of an old drum of red and black twin and earth 2.5mm and 1mm you can get away with saying it was done before the regs changed.then basicly you need to break into a live feed to a socket near your attic you will see 2 cables going to the socket (this is calle a ring main)
then you need to join one of these cables(2.5mm) with a 32A juntion box and run it to the first socket you put in the 1 cable to next socket and so on till the last scoket.then from there to the orginal socket you broke into and that would extend your ring main be sure to use green and yellow sleaving on the bare copper condutor(the earth)and earth the back box of each socket as well as the scocket its selfComment

i would if i was you get a spark to do the work as there are other things involed say you have a radiator you would be advised to have it bonded also if you ran a spare from every socket that may be expensive if you have to chisel out from every socket to the attic to be honest house wireing is only two circiuts with devations but the law has now stopped diy from tampering with electrics.I have been a spark for 20 years gone on to HND and then a degree in electrical power but i cant wire my home house up but yet at work i can deal with up to 11kv and have 17 men working under meIf you tremble with indignation at every injustice then you are a comrade of mineComment

Anyone(with a wee bit sense) can do wiring and installing in their own house as long as they don't bypass or break the official electrical companies seal. They can install wiring and plugs etc. But they MUST get the work approved by a certified Electrician. A wiring diagram must be available to the new house buyers. Any alterations from the last sale must be approved.
Something similar to gas. You can fit your own gas fire but it has to be a CORGI approved fitter to connect it before you can use it.Last edited by forntida; 28 August, 2009, 08:12.I can't wake up Grumpy now in case I am accused of DwarfismComment

After being in the business since i left school in 86, i have seen some really scary DIY wiring and all what most people are bothered about is whether the light goes on & off when they flick the switch, and whether the socket gives some power when they plug their appliance into it !! If if does work, they think it must be wired properly....Not true. You must also make sure that if a fault condition is happening, then the power is automatiacally disconnected within the required time set down by the IEE wiring regs. I think this currenlty stands at 0.4 seconds for a portable appliance, ie anything that plugs in to the wall. And a max of 5 seconds for any fixed equipment, ie electric cooker, immersion heater etc There are companies out there that will carry out testing for you, Electrotest is one name that i see driving around, these carry out pereodic inspections of goverment owned buildings. But if you are not a qualified sparky they will probably find a lot of things wong with your work. have a look here...just done a quick google

I think the best thing is always get a certified professional, end of the day it keeps the trade going and you get a nice professional job at the end of it. Always saves you money in the end, and most people will use the same person or business again so builds up a nice repor and save you cash on later jobs.
hope you provide some pictures when it is done it always nice to see what ideas people use in there house developments."Imagine i have a blaster ray in my hand"
"But you do have a blaster ray in your hand"
"Well you wont have to test your imagination to much then"Comment
