maybe its a dead rat under the floorboards.

        Is all that from experience?

I have now found out my neighbour gets the same smell in their kitchen and they suspect a leak/ water. And that it seems to come after rain more.

Ah well I guess a sensible reply is in order....

It could be a blocked sewer pipe. Lift your manhole cover (if you have one) and ask a neighbour higher up the chain of houses to flush their toilet with some toilet paper. Sit and wait for the water to come splashing down the sewer pipe, if it doesn't come quickly or not at all your problem could be sewage water seeping from a cracked pipe caused by a partial blockage into the soil and causing the smell. Compare the speed to how quickly your own toilet water gets to the manhole.

When it rains the waterbed levels rise and don't allow the leaked sewage to drain away, instead they rise to floor level. Try and get it fixed sharpish as we have major rain forecast for the coming days.
