No but Zappa isn't really regarded as one of the worlds best guitarists really is he? I ain't saying he isn't good but he is more of an all rounder than a dedicated lead and it shows in his playing. Just my opinion though and yes, I do like a bit of Zappa now and then

i think its a lot to do with personal taste ...
hendrix has a sort of natural feel a sort of unthoughtfull style
like technically its all too easy
clapton is very much in my oppinion into string bending and technically a bit more less free in his playing
satriani and via are technical masters
knoflers style seems to be more gentle and not precise but uses fingers and pick making subtle sounding stuff
rock guys like hammet and and say melmestien, bettencourt, van halen, seem to play faster than light arpeggios
all in my oppinion a matter of taste

just a case of who you admire and your personal taste
for me there is no better or best
any person who can make an instrument do what these can do
deserves a real listen not a who's better who's best
technical and natural abbility are not easilly comparable
effects are some of these guys strong points too some can use effects to many degrees to enhance sound and depth 'tone ect
some of the guys i have seen live are amazing
SRV and carlos santana both real mind blowing too
too many to list there aint one ide rather listen to over the other
acoustic players too ..some of these guys are tremendouse players too
all a matter of taste ....some of these guys on youtube too absolutely world class players
sitting on the end of their beds .......makes ya wonder wha else is out there dont it ?

I've always been a huge fan of Clapton, unfortunately never seen him live, but I've recently seen Joe Bonamassa twice and I'm afraid I have to say that would he had been contemporary to the old legends we would probably be talking about him all the time now. He is in his mid thirties and still has a lot left to offer, you should all go see him at first chance, will not be disappointed at all.

i agree with racin snake on this one, it all depends on the gentre of music you like. but putting only two guys in the frame hey comon, others on this thread have mentioned some fantastic plank spankers and i agree they are all worthy, so im gonna put a spanner in the works and mention a few i like, ok billy gibbons, yngwie malmsteen, and wait for it francis rossi of status quo..... you cant wait to tell me quo are a three cord band can you i get that a lot, but he is a great player in fact on the last issue of the guitarist magazine he was first to be interviewed. anyway moving on i like ron wood hes been around for ever and he was in the faces with ronnie lane one of the best bass players ever imo so thats all the famous guys but im sure there are many more guys shreding in their garages ( not on dk tho ) that play great this is a vid of my m8 playing hendrix hes not bad what do you think missed the start i was at the bar getting a beer soz not hijacking the thread just trying to be fair to all

I heard Clapton is a Hack and not the best because he doesn't use enough fingers or strings. Buckethead is pretty gnarly.

aint that why they call him slow hand ?

forgot to mention some great players that just dont do solos or showboat
johny marr . john squire . roddy frame .brian setzer (well maybe not him but he is shit hot )
fantastic gutarists whatever way ya look at it (and many more i aint mentioned )

all these guys know there way around the guitar but dont do solos as these other guys do
got to say there are thousands of guitarists out there who all deserve a mention but havnt been really been personified as guitar heroes or such
a lot of guys like django rienhart are fantastic players too
so modern and post modern guys are worth a good listen too
any genre of guitar music has its finest ...in all it makes playing or listening ..so it never gets boring

It's a shame Paul Simon never gets any recognition as a great guitarist. From all those mentioned I lean more towards Clapton myself, but again that may be just the style of music I'm into.
