Three couples book into a hotel. Thats ?30 total says the receptionist. The couples hand over their ?10 each and go to their rooms. The manager arrives and tells the receptionist that there is a special where 3 rooms are ?25 so gave him ?5 to take back. He was not sure how to divide the ?5 between the 3 couples so decided to keep ?2 for himself and handed each couple ?1.

So that means each couple paid ?9

3 x ?9 = ?27 plus the ?2 that the receptionist kept is ?29

hotel cost: ?30- ?5 discount =?25
add to that the ?2 that manager scammed ?25 + ?2 = ?27
total cost of hotel ?27...

each member charged ?10, then refunded ?1.
each member pays ?9
3 members paying ?9 = ?27

There isnt a missing pound. I first heard this over 20 years ago from my maths teacher. Its just the way you say it. Its like the eleven fingers thing - count on first hand 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 then count 1,2,3,4,5 on other hand and add 6 and 5 so you have eleven. You never have 11 finger though.
The way i heard it wa 3 old ladies that share a house see a nice radio in an advert in the paper in the Comet sale.
It was half price reduced from ?60 to ?30.
Soo they decide to chip a tennet in each and ask the young lad from next door if he could go to the shop and get it for them.
Anyway he heads down to Comet and when he pays for the radio finds it reduce again to ?25. So on the way home he uses ?2 to buy 20 fags ( It was over 20 years ago!)
He then gives them the radio and ?3 change.
They have spent each ?10 - ?1 each = ?9
So they have spent ?27 between them plus the ?2 = ?29.

SO if the 3 couples were happy with 10 notes a pop

a) Why the hell the the manager say ANYTHING about a refund

b) Why did the manager not sort it out, his idea

c) Surly the 'extra' would have gone towards new light switches
if there were 'Dogging'?


d) Original answer, if the manager gave the receptionist 5 one
pound coins, makes sense, two in his pocket 3 x 1 pounds
in their face
