ive tried google and found some dodgy efforts at them
there quiet pricey to buy thats why i want to give it a go making one
but im good with my hands so there will be no hassle making one once ive got a good idea of one

this is the 3g router i have
    EnGenius 3G Router NET-3G-ESR-6650

ive found this antenna on the net its very cheap but its frequency band doent suit i think
im not up on this kind of thing so correct me if im wrong an il buy it

DealExtreme: $15.56 1990~2170MHz 12dBi Directional High Gain 10-Unit Antenna for 3G WWAN Network (N Female)

You're right, the frequency of the antenna doesn't go high enough. It should still work...but you will lose a lot of the power gain.

I have an old dish that was going to be used to boost my wi-fi. Never got round to fitting it... might try harder, later.

              I have some disturbing news.

I checked this over with he who knows so much, my dad. If you use an antenna that isn't correctly tuned you will be running the risk of burning out the transmit amp from the dongle.

If you go with the tiny little external antenna, as in the wizardofodds post, with a parabolic dish. You should see far better results.

He did come up with another solution, but this will need a small amout of research & some hardware.
In short, you can make a yagi stye antenna on a PCB board. Draw your design on the PCB, coat it, then dip it in the acid to leave your design on the PCB. Solder your connecting wires onto the pickup bar & away you go.
This system is already used on bluetooth & wifi devices so it does work. You will just be making it bigger.

                  WiFi Aerials

There are several disigns for WiFi aerials on the Internet,One of the favorite is to use a "pringles" tube, yes the crisp tube!
Biggest problem with all of then is the need to be accurate with the holes and measurements of the elements as a small error will make a large loss of signall
Easiest way is to use an old Sky dish and a USB wireless stick as already mensioned.

It's not the wi-fi that needs boosting, it's the 3G dongle.

The problem with the use of a sky dish is that it isn't parabolic. The dish is setup for receiving, but not transmitting. Yes, it will work...but you still run the risk of damaging the transmitter on the wi-fi dongle.

The most successful designs use things like sieves & colanders as these are parabolic.

Think people actually put the dongle on the lmb to get a better reception as opposed to plugging the dih into the dongle antenna connection

Here's some heavy reading made sightly easier on parabolic dishes & tuning. This is for Ham radio so the data would need amending for 3G signals.
