yes. i went to the doctor a few weeks ago, was ?50 consultation fee plus ?30 for blood tests and then another ?8 in the chemist for a prescription for antibiotics. i had to go back again the following week and was charged ?30 repeat consultation fee and paid ?20 for more prescription meds

Wow can't you get some sort of insurance, or is it just one of those things where you have to pay

      THE TRUTH
      The Hillsborough Independent Panel. 12/09/12

Today's report is black and white. The Liverpool fans were not the cause of the disaster.
The panel has quite simply found 'no evidence' in support of allegations of 'exceptional levels of drunkenness, ticketlessness or violence among Liverpool fans' and 'no evidence that fans had conspired to arrive late at the stadium' and 'no evidence that they stole from the dead and dying'.

well some people don't, if you are on social welfare you are entitled to a medical card and they get free gp visits and prescriptions. not quite sure what the criteria are to be eligible for one.

So why doesn't that do the same as NHS contributions, ie give you free gp appointments etc ?

                      not sure, it just doesn't.

PRSI covers a few things, for example if you are out of work sick you will get paid a portion of your wages by the state and if you lose your job and you have paid enough PRSI contributions you are entitled to the dole without it being means tested.

the fact is if you need an emergency operation you will get it, public or private. what it comes down to after that is who they will send the bill to.

i would love to be an nhs patient and get to see the doctor for free, we have to pay ?50 euro here every time we want to see a gp, plus pay for any meds. it can really build up if you are sick for any length of time
Evastar I've always maintained that this country has a 3 tier health system.
                        1. Those who can afford to pay health insurance plans.
                        2. Those who receive medical cards because they can't afford to pay or have found a scam to get a card.
                        3. Those inbetween who don't earn enough to afford private health insurance but earn just too much to qualify for a card.

All of the high earners in ops post should come to Ireland and double those earnings on the gravy train.

well there's quite a difference in health insurance plans as well, the one me and my kids are on is pretty basic, i don't know why we bother actually as it doesn't cover a lot of hospitals, but you still feel that it's something you need to have just in case

Slightly off topic-I emailed the previous and the present ministers for health stating I am on 2 tablets every day for the rest of my life -the doctor knows me,the chemist knows me-so why do I have to pay 20 euro every 3 months to renew my subscription? Both sent similar replies that it used to have to be renewed every month but now it's only every 3 months. Ironically when I collected my latest one last thursday it was for 1 month as the dr. had included another tablet. My prescription was among 20 others that day which comes to 400 euros for the dr. signing his name. Not a bad days signing plus he'll probably get a discounted holiday from the drug company whose medicine he has now foisted on me. Tablets + prescription for this month-107 euro.

so you don't actually see the doctor but have to pay to get a prescription repeated?

i was quite annoyed when i had to pay 30 euro to see the doctor to get a second antibiotic. it wasn't my fault the one he gave me originally didn't work.

i don't think doctors live in the real world at all. another one prescribed a skin cream for my daughter last year. when i went for the prescription i was told it was over 100 euro for a tube of cream. needless to say i didnt end up getting it.

can you get your tablets online? save yourself the fees and the overcharging the chemist is prolly giving you for the meds themselves.
