In our culture it is a big no-no, but the thread is not about the UK or any other western culture, it's about china and we have no right to criticise their cuisine.

Its actually not that much of a no-no in western culture. Up until fairly recently it was a common occurance in some of the Eastern European countries. It still is quite common in parts of European Russia (and the 'new' baltic states). Its even legal (or was until recently - dont know if the law has now been changed) to sell dog meat in most of the states of the USA.

During the last world war it was even more common. Its amazing how quickly survival trumps 'culture' !

tbh, i'd argue that food really isn't a cultural thing at all but more to do with whats available in your local environment. If all thats around is grubs and Kangaroo's, then thats what you eat. If all thats around is lemurs or monkeys then again, thats what you eat.

End of the day, dogs are no different from any other potential food source. If there's plenty of them around and not much else then you eat them. The fact that we in the west have generally decided to keep dogs as companions rather than as a source of food probably indicates we have things far to easy rather than any problem on the part of others that may have a more difficult life.

In France they eat Horsemeat, in Scandanavia they eat Reindeer, in Spain they eat the odd cat. Is eating dog really that different ?
