I would like to offer a few tips for those looking for work based upon my experiences working for a small business.

    1. Don't call and ask if they are hiring. I get this call two or three times a week, if you are lazy enough to just call then I will assume that you aren't worth hiring. My response to this is "We aren't hiring now, but stop by and fill out an application."

    2. Stop by a prospective job and speak with who you need to speak with. Act respectful, watch your language with everyone you meet, and don't gossip. The people you meet, especially in a small business, all have input regarding you and a possible job.

    3. After the drop in, if you are not flatly rejected, then stop by a week later. If you still are not rejected, stop by a week or two later. Keep yourself fresh in mind. Don't hang around talking with employee's, just stay fresh.

    4. Try to do a little research before you stop by, so that you don't come across as a dumbass. If you want an office job then you had better know the basics, i.e. Word, Excel, a good foundation in math, know and use proper grammar, etc. If you want a mechanics position then you had better have your own tools and some background. Present yourself for what you are trying for.

    5. Finally, don't dismiss any prospect, no matter what it is. Think you're too good to be the bottom rung? Then you won't get a chance to climb.

Remember, a huge portion of the population is applying online or phoning it in, do something to separate yourself from the crowd.

      snowy,thx for the reply.

the problem with the scenario you first gave was not just the situation (golf course) but the peer group you discussed. they do not have the networking skills that come with a little maturity, some self belief and an actual marketplace to sell themselves in.
