How running car costs ?130 a week

The cost of running and driving a car has rocketed by 14 per cent over the past year, a new report has claimed.

Drivers are now paying an average of ?128.64 a week to run a new car, while those with a used vehicle are still forking out as much as ?52.75 a week.

The investigation, by motoring organisation the RAC, found that depreciation ? how much value a car loses over time ? had risen most rapidly, up 16.67 per cent over the period, followed by insurance, which was up 14.38 per cent.

Fuel was 12.4 per cent higher than a year ago, while maintenance costs, on average, were 8.8 per cent higher.

The overall bill is the equivalent of 55.74p per mile and means it now costs an average of ?1,556 more a year to own and run a new car than it did in 2007.

Car finance now costs 9.85 per cent more, while RAC membership ? which was included in the calculations ? had gone up 4.21 per cent. All in, the costs amounted to ?6,689 compared with ?5,870 last year.

Now wonder I do not have any money left end of week

I better start looking for donkey.

Aye well, once the majority have moved off fossil fueled cars, as if electricity didn't come form fossil fuels *shrug*, then the government will find a way to tax whatever people are using be that gas, hydrogen fuel cells or electricity. At the end of the day the government knows motorists will pay.

I'm guessing that it will be 'pay per mile' system at some stage, most likely when the possibility of having a transponder in your car to track how many miles you do, and of course to automatically print out your speeding ticket should you transgress.

As for the cost to run a car each week, I pay around ?100 a week for fuel.

I remember 15 years ago when I first converted a car to LPG that people said they will raise tax on it.

It was half the price of petrol then and is still half the price of petrol now.

It's still from a fossil fuel and has been used since the 1950's, it had a bit of a come back in the late 90's but died down again.

But at 65p per litre and no negative affects to the car, and a small road tax rebate too, I've been on winner for 15 years.

i spent over ?100 on petrol in the last week

interestingly, on a separate note, i noticed that petrol and diesel are now the same price in Ireland again, why is that?

No idea, diesel is running ahead of petrol by about 7p per litre here

Technically you can convert a diesel, but it's not really worth it as it only gives you around 15% back.

My friend makes his own biodiesel. It cost him ?300 for the kit off the net and makes 120litres per batch.

He works it out that after buying the chemicals plus paying for the electricity, and the fact he gets very cheap oil from the local chippy, the biodiesel is 35p per ltr.

Legally you can make 2500 ltr's per year without paying any duty.

You can use just straight veg oil but it costs more.

Yes, i know all about this.. my car can run on PVO aswell..

But i did my homework before i bought the kit. i visited a few chippies and ordered a nice meal to eat. whilst they where preparing the glorious food i dropped the line .. "What you do with your WVO"..

They all say it isnt worth the time and the effort for us to collect it all up and store it. ..

So in all it aint worth it for me..

Does biodiesel harm your engine? I've heard some people say it does.
