If you make a 'mistake', you learn from that 'mistake' so that the same 'mistake' doesnt happy in the future.

The doctor did the right thing in assuming that the patient was pregnant given the symptoms she had. If the doctor had sent her to a dentist because she thought the sickness and swollen stomach might have been caused by a bad tooth then this would have been a bloody mistake!

If you genuinely think this doctor made a mistake then you must be of the opinion that all girls that go to their GP with sickness in the morning and a sweollen belly should be screened for tumours.

If you think this is the case then your right to vote should be stripped from you.

maybe the dr did test for pregnancy, some cancers can show high levels of the same pregnancy hormone, so she assumed the girl was pregnant , least she sent her for ultrasound to determine the fact

I'm not jumping in on this pointless thread.. but what worries me is the young girl should of had the option for her mum to be present or not during the result being put forward.. what happened to patient confidentiality ??

I don't think the full facts have been put forward for anyone to argue if it was right or wrong or if the GP should apologies or not.

If this girl was going to hide the pregnancy she would have gone to see the doctor on her own and not with her mother.

I am shore when doctor gave the bad news in front of her mother the pair must have been in a shock, some teenagers do commit suicide.

There are issue the doctors are not able discuss in front of parents and that doctor broke all the rules of confidentiality!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As no one apart from the patient has had any input into this thread I'll keep my options open. It was however stated that the Doctor had said she'd probably had a miscarriage. I'm probably wrong but I think you're wasting your time looking for a heart beat in someone thats miscarried.

The other point is the fact that she had a scan the next day. No information as to who ordered the scan but it may have been the Doctor. Who knows maybe the Doctor actually said 'She thought she had been pregnant but may have suffered a miscarriage I think I'll arrange a scan ASAP' This could put a whole different angle on a one sided report. It will be interesting to see what any follow up investigation shows. Again I'll not speculate until I hear it from those involved.

It's very unfortunate for the young girl but she still has her life. If the medical profession weren't that concerned I'm sure she'd have waited a few months for a scan like everyone else.

Some doctors are crap....i had a vey bad accident 20 years ago where i broke my back....The doctors never noticed this until i was discharged after just one day in hospital !

when i was pregnant i bought a test in the chemist and didn't go to the doctors until after i had used the home pregnancy test. so no, the doctor didn't perform a pregnancy test on me, just took my word for it, asked me a few questions about dates and wrote a letter for the hospital.

having said that, teenage girls are quite likely to lie about sex and the possibility of them being pregnant, especially if their mother is present, so i'm not surprised that the doctor dismissed whatt she said. the fact that she suggested pregnancy in front of the mother is regrettable, but if the girl attended with her mother insisting on a diagnosis and pregnancy was by far the most probable diagnosis well then she had to say it.

maybe she asked the girl if she wanted to discuss the matter in private, we don't know what was actually said. what i do know is when my father was very ill and we met with his consultant, there were three of us in the room and afterwards we all remembered different things. it's very hard at a time of stress, or indeed any other time, to remember exactly what was said word for word without colouring it yourself because of your emotional attachment to the situation.

and its probably quite likely the doctor suggested talking in private, the girl probably said it was okay to talk about anything in front of her mother, as she knew she wasn't pregnant; the doctor then suggested pregnancy and the mother went off the deep end and didn't hear any of the rest of the conversation because she was so indignant about the aspersions being cast on her darling daughter's character etc etc etc .....

as usual the rags are out to sensationalise something to sell more copies to make money

because the doctor didnt necessarily say that the girl was 100% definitely pregnant. we dont know what was said. maybe she said the most likely diagnosis is pregnancy and sent her for a scan. somebody sent her for a scan.

and to apologise is to admit liability, the doctors insurance would have warned them against that.

and as for calling the paper a 'rag', there have been plenty of scandals in the news this year about journalists making up stories and tapping people's phones illegally, so i would take anything reported in any paper with a pinch of salt.
