Yet another retarded idea from the idiots in power.

As has already been pointed out, trader plate drivers would have a problem, number plate theft would increase & walking up with a petrol can. Even if a rule is included that states a number plate must be given before petrol can be taken, it still won't work...my petrol strimmer doesn't have a VIN.

You can also add theft of petrol from cars in the list of repercussions.

Add to this the fact that the database takes up to 3 days to update. Don't believe the crap they tell you about it updating imediatley...

ANPR works fine when installed in police vehicles, but anything else is a waste of time.

The only thing stopping this working is peoples attitudes. We know that some scum will try everything to get around methods that help out the law abiding Insurance paying public. Let them fill up with petrol cans. If it means they've got to get mucked about walking backwards and forwards with 5L petrol cans good luck to them.

If your an Auto Trader it wouldn't be hard to implement a system where all Auto Traders have a fuel card issued when they become registered which can activate the pumps. I'm sure some scum will get a hold of these cards but probably only a few out of the thousands not having insurance.

As for stealing plates yes that can happen but there is already means to record where vehicles are at certain times. I know of a few locations with cameras that record all vehicles passing and check them against the DVLA database. If two cars with the same plates pass different cameras within a certain time that would make it impossible this registration would be highlighted on the Police ANPR and pulled when it passes a police car. Eventually they'd get the right car, impound it and hammer the driver.

No system would be 100% fool proof but it would certainly make it a lot harder for most without insurance.

Who will pay for the cards for motor traders, obviously there will be a charge for registering and issuing cards.

Same for number plates being stolen as a result of thsis foolish attempt. Why should the innocent pay?

Bag of crap idea, and there must be money to be made by insurance companies and petrol companies otherwise no-one would bother. Don't live in hope of any reduction in insurance premiums.

Good timing. In todays Daily Mail they are listing figures of 160 people per year being killed by uninsured drivers and of the 9-13 year olds being killed, 10% were killed by uninsured drivers. Maybe these are the innocent people paying for the scum. I'm sure any of their family members will agree that this could be a system that will reduce the deaths.

All that will happen is the folk that dont have insurance will start using false plates

It happens now when people fuel up without paying, so if no insurance means no fuel and someone introduces the kind of system that has been suggeated here then expect lots of parking fines, speeding tickets and police knokcing everyone elses door.

As for CCTV capturing someones face, hmm have you seen the average CCTV installation? Even at a couple of meters from a camera the quality will be too low, light conditions, low resolutions, lack of auto focus etc

I have motor trader insurance and we can already list our vehicles directly with the MID database. I have logon details that thats 5 minutes to add or remove a vehicle.
