Snow Costs UK Economy '?500m A Day'

Friday's heavy snow could cost the UK economy almost ?500m, according to new research by insurance group RSA.

The bad weather continues to engulf the UK , with up to 30cm - or a foot - of snow expected in south Wales.

RSA based its findings on the economic impact of the severe weather conditions in December 2010.

At the time, the Office for National Statistics estimated the snow caused the UK economy to contract by 0.5% in the fourth quarter.

Jon Sellors, RSA's head of research, told Sky News the ongoing weather conditions had impacted businesses, schools and the transport system.

"We estimate that up to a third of the UK's workforce have been unable to get into work, which would cost the economy up to ?473m.

"And if the bad weather continues, the economic cost is only going to get higher."

Ross Walker, UK economist at RBS, said there was an "obvious risk" snow would hit growth in the UK.

"This weather comes at a bad time - when the economy is growing at a 1% annual rate, it doesn't take much in any individual quarter to push it backwards," he told Sky News.

Well we all know what Osborne will say next time the growth figures are released.
He should be used to snow blizzards by now, he has shoved more up his nose than he has ever walked on.

Must be a new thing to Osborne, tons of snow and not a prostitute in sight...

Snow is the fault of those on benefits and the low paid. If they stopped buying food they could afford to switch on their central heating and melt the snow away, therefore saving the country more! Selfish people that they are. The immigrants from the EU also smuggle snow in in their cases.

How can they say it costs 500m a day to snow??

Who is setting the price?? surely we can make our own snow??

Its imported from the east today.. surely it would be cheaper as the euro is low??

The reason it costs so much is due to bad drivers.

If every driver went through a winter driving course, things would be a lot easier on the roads.

I'm so sick of being stuck behind slow arse morons who drop their speed to 15mph, just because some white stuff is in the air.

I passed a police van doing 40mph on a clear 70mph limit dual carriageway. I was the only person to do this, everyone else stayed behind them. Two miles of traffic doing 40mph because nobody knows how to drive in winter.

back on topic, 500m could buy a shed load of grit, maybe if they invested the lost money in grit they wouldn't have the county grinding to a stand still.

Here in M/C everybody drops to 5 MPH.

if the road is clear then fine, but when is is like driving on sand then slower is better.

So what do you do in a 40 MPH zone when it's heavy snow?

hope your repoering the van for daugours driving

My speed depends on the amount of grip I have. Usually every mile or so, when I'm out of traffic, I'll brake. Increasing the level of braking until the ABS kicks in. I'll then accelerate until I lose traction.

From that I'll know what speed I can travel safely. Given I've not crashed during the winter since 1993, I'll take it I've got it right.

If I was driving dangerously when I passed the police van, they would of pulled me over.

I was talking to a friend last night. He does a lot of driving up & down the country. It's his opinion that the police drive stupidly slow for a laugh. He has passed miles of traffic doing 50mph on the motorway, when he got to the front of the queue, there was a police volvo with the coppers laughing their tits off at the people to afraid to overtake them.

I would agree with the govt figure, it?s the combination of both the snow and the temperature goes below 0 degree the old and the disabled get ?25 each as long as the freezing continues and by the look of it there are more disable people then the people on the dole??.
