    New rules for bailiffs industry

Bailiffs will be regulated under new laws to "clean up" the industry and protect vulnerable debtors, the Government has announced.

New rules will stop late-night visits to collect debts and restrictions on what property can be seized are being introduced.

Bailiffs will also be banned from entering homes when only children are present and they will no longer be able to set their own fees. New safeguards will also prevent them from using force against people who owe money, according to the Ministry of Justice.

Under the changes, bailiffs will also be forced to undergo a mandatory training and certification scheme and those who breach the new rules will be barred from the industry.

Justice Minister Helen Grant said: "For too long bailiffs have gone unregulated, allowing a small minority to give the industry a bad name. Too many people in debt have had the additional stress of dealing with aggressive bailiffs who often charge extortionate fees.

"These new laws will clean up the industry and ensure bailiffs play by the rules or face being prevented from practising. They will also make sure businesses and public bodies can collect their debts fairly."

Luckily here in Scotland these scumbags have had their powers seriously restricted. They are called sheriff officers up here. I remember there was one at the golf club and no one would go out with him. ~~~~in lowlife.

Exactly! A lot of people just ignore court orders to repay debt.

Somebody's got to do the dirty work.
He who laughs last probably didn't get the joke.

You're right there Nara but its the way they go about their business that gets up everyone's goat. Dirty tricks, threatening behaviour and intimidation.Thats why these regulations are long long overdue.

I think if most people spent a couple of days working alonside a Bailiff they'd soon change their opinion. I worked as a locksmith for a few of them and always acted under a Warrant issued by a Magistrate. The debtor always received letters of intent, some hand delivered and some delivered by recorded mail. On average it too about three letters, a personal visit and recorded phone conversations before the Magistrate would issue the Warrant.

We'd then turn up and they'd deny all knowledge of receiving notification even after showing a video of the letter being posted through their letter box taken on a smart phone.

Bailiffs tend not to go for people that don't owe anything. They're after people that have breached contracts or refused to pay debts. I'm sure no one here would be happy if someone owed them money and refused to pay it back.

I lost count of the amount of people that owed money had the top of the range TV, leather suites and flash car on the drive yet said they're poor so can't pay the money back they owe.

Bailiffs are just doing there job like any of us, it?s the rules adopted by our govt, our courts.

We stopped this sort of rules in third world countries only to adopt similar rules, when some one has no money to pay when losing employment or other circumstances there are other ways to get the money and not by force..

Our court system has completely failed the poor people in our community at large, I will give you 1 example, 4 years ago thousands of people deposited money in Iceland bank our council also deposited not millions but billions of pounds we gave from our council tax they have told to bugger off we have no money to give you back.

This was the rulings from the EU court.
The court of the European Free Trade Association on Monday said Iceland didn't breach European Economic Area directives on deposit guarantees by not compensating U.K. and Dutch depositors in Landsbanki's online savings accounts, known as Icesave accounts.

It is the banks responsibility to make shore a person will able to pay back the money he borrows full stop.

Back to the topic will you now able to send bailiffs to recover your money from the Ice land bank???

                          Read this link.
