Home Secretary Theresa May is coming under pressure to investigate claims Britain's electronic listening post GCHQ has been gathering data through a secret US spy programme.
Keith Vaz, chairman of the home affairs committee, said the allegations were "chilling".
According to The Guardian, GCHQ had access to data covertly gathered from leading internet firms in the US.
GCHQ said it operated within a "strict legal and policy framework".
The Guardian says it has obtained documents showing that the secret listening post, based at Cheltenham, had access to the Prism system, set up by America's National Security Agency (NSA), since at least June 2010.

If, i was to say something that sounded like something else when im visiting another country and that country was on high alert then it would be my fault, and i should expect to face questioning.. (cant say much as im flying tomorrow myself).

Political prisoners are nothing new! Stalin imprisoned people for speaking out and slaugthered his own people. even when they where eating each other because he took the food from them.. countless American presidents have imprisoned thousands if not millions of its own people for being black or for white/black relationships.... the British have slaughtered millions upon millions for protesting against the way they're ruling.. The polish slaughtered 30,000 of its german speaking people after ww1.

All that and nobody questions anything??

The security services can only do as much as they can.. theyre never going to be 100% effective.. after all theyre only human.. probably 70% of there information is handed to them from spies or fellow human beings who are concerned!

Why is it that these 'major' stories aren't reported by the press until several years AFTER they are pretty much common knowledge. I thought everyone was already aware of the US prism project and the 'secret' court orders to various telecoms/internet providers so why has it suddenly become a major non-story ?

So what does he class as a law abiding citizen? Someone who downloads music/movies is not law abiding and so fair target then?

William Hague said reports that the UK's eavesdropping centre GCHQ had circumvented the law to gather data on British citizens were "nonsense".

It's already been reported that they circumvented the law, why tell us something we already know? Or is he just re-emphasing that to make us feel happy about it?

Maybe its to hide other stories?? there is loads of reasons.. im never sure we will ever know the true reasons... . There is corruption.. and news that suits the governments at the time.. Think we call it brainwashing!

BUT! If you truly wanted 100% privacy and moan about this rule then you shouldn't use facebook, especially not with actual details about yourself and photos any random person (such as myself) can easily access.

The UK is tapping fibre-optic cables that carry global communications and gathering vast amounts of data, the Guardian has reported. The newspaper said its report was based on leaked documents from GCHQ, the UK's electronic eavesdropping agency.
The information from internet and phone use was stored for up to 30 days to be sifted and analysed, the paper said. GCHQ declined to comment on the claims but said its compliance with the law was "scrupulous".


In 2009, GCHQ issued an unusual statement in which it said it had no ambitions, expectations or plans for a database to store centrally all communications data in Britain, our correspondent added.
Nick Pickles, from privacy campaign group Big Brother Watch, said: "This appears to be dangerously close to, if not exactly, the centralised database of all our internet communications, including some content, that successive governments have ruled out and Parliament has never legislated for.


"If GCHQ have been intercepting huge numbers of innocent people's communications as part of a massive sweeping exercise, then I struggle to see how that squares with a process that requires a warrant for each individual intercept."
Shami Chakrabarti, director of human rights group Liberty, said she was shocked by the Guardian's report and accused GCHQ of allowing itself a "very generous interpretation of the law".
