    Benefits Cap

More than 12,000 people have moved into work after being told about the benefits cap, the government says. The cap, on the total amount of benefits that non-working people aged 16 to 64 can receive, has begun rolling out across England, Scotland and Wales.

Couples and lone parents will now not receive more than ?500 a week, while a ?350 limit applies to single people.

But critics say the changes will hit parts of the country unfairly, and will not tackle underlying problems.
Those in work who also claim benefits, are not affected by the cap.

BBC News - Benefits cap leads to more people in work, says government

Now that the benefits cap has kicked in... which tbh is a good thing really - thoughI don't know anyone who gets anywhere near that, although I must admit I know very few unemployed people, will MP's housing expenses also be subject to similar caps?

    Accommodation Expenses

This allowance will be payable only to non-London Area MPs and, by September 2012, will cover only rent or hotel accommodation plus associated expenses such as utility bills. For
2011/12, Members may claim a maximum of ?19,900. MPs choosing not to rent accommodation can claim for hotel accommodation up to ?150 per night in the London area or ?120 per night elsewhere.
?19k a year isn't bad for housing on a part time job (plus a wage of ?66k due to go up by around 9%) is it? or if they take the London nightly allowance of ?150 a night then that could be up to ?1050 a week - more than double the total amount they've capped benefits on. I bet IDS can live with that.

    http://www.parliament.uk/documents/c...office/m05.pdf

and they're looking to try increase that for themselves as well. Do as I say, not as I do They should be leading by example and saving money, all I've seen so far is them making everyone else pay the debt while they take more for themselves year in year out.

Also forgot to add. This appears designed to make housing in London more expensive and so effectively get the peasants to move out leaving London to those that have money.....

And so they should tbh, as I said there has to be limits, but again there should be tight limits for MP's as well.

Cut the lot.. if your out of work because of genuine reasons then fine.. but if your a pisshead on the streets roaming around all day i have no quarm in seeing you suffer.

Whilst suffering, if we see food all over your clothes ailing with other dirt. We will question that aswell..

If your not attempting to find work you will be automatically be castrated. Some at birth,!

                I agree with all above.

I still totaly hate what this government stands for. I hate the fact Labour has its strings pulled by unions in the same way I hate this government is controlled by the out of touch fat cats who are now finacialy klensing areas of the country.. I would prefer politics to be finaced from tax and ban lobbying... This way we might see politics work for the people...

I thought in the last census over one in three of the population of London were born outside of the UK anyway so there will be less peasants to move.

All i would say is don't believe everything you read in the tory press, the toffs are enjoying themselves taking benefits off people, the state of the country has given the likes of duncan smith a job he always wanted under thatcher, to blame the poor for our ills is nothing but CRAP, benefit caps are fine if done in a balanced and considerate way, phased in would have been the right way, greedy landlords in london have a lot to answer for, most of the figures d/smith comes out with are not correct, he is as bad as the P/M, he makes it up as he goes along, of course i agree something had to be done, but i'm struggling to see were the shall we say better off in our society are contributing to put it right.

quite right, the buy to let landlords are squeezing the system til it squeaks cos of the previous and this govt refusal to address the social housing problem, which can actually be traced back to thatchers reign,to build affordable local govt housing would bring both much needed jobs and would stop the greedy private landlords from dictating the market.

It's cheaper to give out the contraceptive pill than to provide housing for those that can't pay for it themselves.

That presumes they all got themselves in that position deliberately, know one lost there family after divorce? know one lost there job? no battered wives? no family split up after one addiction or another? no sick people? you will always have a section who don't want to work, the tory front bench believe all on benefits are scum, you surely don't believe that do you?

so,it is only females that require housing and only those of child bearing age???? no one is so unfortunate to lose their job and then subsequently their home is obviously never male by that critique????? we are all only four unfortunate steps from homelessness\requiring govt help. i.e job, home, marriage, street is all it takes to fall into that trap, something a tory voting, daily mail reading intellectual thinks only the scroungers rally to that point.

Yes but its made up of rent, mainly in London

I know lots of dossers and none get anywhere near that, its usually sick money and rent which amounts to roughly under ?200 per week

Most people it wont affect but those that it does will have to find cheaper housing, and rightly so tbh why should they live in ?2000 a month digs all paid for while some workers cant afford the mortgage on their council home
