How Many People Can Live on Planet Earth?

In a Horizon special, naturalist Sir David Attenborough investigates whether the world is heading for a population crisis.

In his lengthy career, Sir David has watched the human population more than double from 2.5 billion in 1950 to nearly seven billion. He reflects on the profound effects of this rapid growth, both on humans and the environment.

While much of the projected growth in human population is likely to come from the developing world, it is the lifestyle enjoyed by many in the West that has the most impact on the planet. Some experts claim that in the UK consumers use as much as two and a half times their fair share of Earth's resources.

Sir David examines whether it is the duty of individuals to commit not only to smaller families, but to change the way they live for the sake of humanity and planet Earth.

So what, some dk members have no kids, want no kids, so they dont have the hardship when they grow up.

no point breeding, what if devilfish accudently drops the key to the regestrations form down a drain?

As British people and therefore superior in every way to the rest, it is our duty to breed like rabbits in order to whup their butts when they get out of line.

Got it all wrong Mjolineo British people not like Chinese breeders that’s why we need more immigration to fill the gap for employments, etc.

We have a large problem looming soon whether like it or not. As we are told oil is running out, so they're looking to grow crops to use as a replacement. That in itself will lead to a price rise for the crops they use to replace fuel. They already know we'll pay the price for fuel because we pay through the nose as it is. As larger amounts of the crops are needed that'll lead to less for food at a reasonable price. So teh choice will come down to eat or have fuel. In the west we'll choose both, and so the price will rise. That's ok for the west because we'll pay, those in the poorer countries can't afford to. Only problem we then face is that we will need the poorer countries to use their land for extra capacity. That's the least of our problems really because more people use more water, although those in the south of the UK today have had plenty for the last few weeks that and we'll need more minerals etc to continue onwards in making the planet a concrete jungle, so removing trees and plants which we need to make the air fit to breathe. Companies driving this won't care, only thing they're after is making money and since they have the money they will continue to do so.

We're probably 4 billion over the number of people we need. The poorer will be the first to go anyway, since they will be less able to pay the price to live on a world short of resources at a fair price.

At the end of the day the earth won't miss us.

So it's ok for the rich to breed, but not the poor? Utter bollox. The west only got where it is, with as much money as it has, by kicking the living sh*t out of the natives of those countries we call third world because we could. We took what we wanted and then left. At one time countries used to encourage population growth in the poor so they had plenty of cannon fodder to go out and die for them. As you'll probably have noticed by now China and India are buying up anything in the way of resources that they can, any country no matter where - they have no intentions of slowing the rate down either. Conquer the world with money now instead of wars is the name of the game, and the west is losing that battle because the riches we had, and the head start we took, has been squandered.

Those who have the resources will win out, and it doesn't look like being us.

We are already living over borrowed time, just in London they have to kill 40,000 chicken every day to feed people in restaurants, we can not carry on this way for long time, I have solution every man and women at the age of 12 will have to have there genital locked like ECU and can only be open under the world supervision.

Just a thought,.......If were running out of oil do we use human Shit to grow the plant to eat or fuel the cars and is cannibalism off the menu
Also instead of drinking water couldn't we all drink beer instead
SJ stop people eating in restaurants in London 40,000 chicken's saved everyday think how many barrels of oil that will save
all we need is to teach the 40,000 Londoners to become breatharians (they believe they can live only on the energy from sunlight, and do not need nourishment from food)
Well meat is half way there he consumes a lot of air

When I was young ( oh no not this again) we used to grow our own veg. in front and back garden. Today this is not practical because we can buy cheaper in supermarket and we need that space now for decking and other uselee things.

Just look at the supermarket model. Rows and rows of food that you never use yet it is there for others who do. Which leads to over stocking and a lot of extra waste.

That is just one small part of a huge picture.

That would depend if we really are running out of oil tbh. When I was at school they claimed it was the remains of fossils, and it's still called fossil fuel. Now the claim is that it's dead plankton (whales can't have been hungry back then), still call it a fossil fuel, and yet no-one in any government is really worried that it's running out? It's not a problem running out for cars, we find something else, however in this age of jetting round the world what will they do for aviation fuel for planes to bomb civilians, or fuel for the tanks to invade somewhere else? So you have to wonder whether it is the remains of plankton, whether it is running out or is it just a way to increase profits for companies and revenue for governments?

Still 50% too many people on the planet though. As for limiting 3 kids for every couple, that's still a 50% increase generation on generation. Previously governments had wars to kill the poor and unemployed off, how they must miss the trenches.
