Prostitutes and drug dealers may not often be considered the most economically productive of Britain?s workers, but from September their activities will give the UK a ?10 billion lift.

Under an overhaul of the national accounts to meet a dictat from Brussels, the Office for National Statistics will for the first time this year include drugs and prostitution in its estimate of the size of the economy.

All income must be declared and tax paid, and if they are in full employment will they be eligible for tax credit and child benefit?

From memory it isn't prostitution that is illegal, it is soliciting that is. So in reality HMRC could send them a bill and they could pay tax, and offset those things "only used for the job" against their yearly tax bill
