last orders on 24- hour boozers

SWEEPING powers to end Britain's 24-hour booze culture will be unveiled today.

Local people will get new rights to oppose late-night pubs and clubs - even if they do not live near them.
Councils will be able to impose "traditional" opening times again in areas plagued by drunken violence.
And there will be a ban on supermarkets and shops selling alcohol below cost price.
Home Secretary Theresa May will also promise a rethink of powers to crackdown on anti-social behaviour.
She will pledge a new crusade to tackle the boozed-up yobs who terrorise towns and cities.
Mrs May will say: "The benefits promised by the 24-hour drinking 'caf? culture' have failed to materialise and in its place we have seen an increase in the number of alcohol-related incidents and drink-fuelled crime and disorder."
Home Office figures show there were around one million drink-related crimes last year.
Late-night pubs and clubs will pay for the cost of extra policing in the early hours.
And fines for selling drink to kids will double to ?20,000.

Economey, vat up, blah, cut back, blah you need to order a fire engine a week before a fire due to cut backs, blah blah blah.

SO why stop the pubs being open 34/7 all them thick people that do night shifts, eg pizza delivery drivers, farmers, team leaders in pork pie factorys etc, there "7 PM" is mid morning, human rights, blah blah blah

ALSO loss of revenue from sales!

The French have been saying this for years. They drink to socialise whilst we drink to get hammered, how uncivilised.

I'm rather embarrassed by the whole affair.

        i think thats a bit of a myth m8,
the frogs love their booze and their fags. they have real with problems with drink driving and higher rate of liver disease and cancer (paritculary in men) than in uk.
they are portrayed as having the odd glass of wine with their meals. think its more like a couple of bottles with their brekkie....

I visit Paris a few times a year as a good friend is married to a lovely French lass, I can honestly say I've never seen the same drunken scenes we have to put up with every weekend in our town centre.

The real issue for concern are the supermarkets selling alcohol at a loss in order to try and sell you a lookalike lamb chop at a profit, that's downright disgraceful and this practice should be banned.

I think the Nordic countries have the right balance of cost vs consumption, we could learn a lot from them.

Time to crack open another 9p can of Tesco value beet rated at 12% and take a belt to the wife.

Based on what I've seen I'd say that they have a bigger marijuana problem that us and not drinking, although I recall reading an article claiming that the British were the biggest dopeheads in the Eurozone.

Anyway buy a pint in Sweden and it'll cost northwards of ?7 compared to ?2.50 in the UK. Raise the price and people will naturally drink less or brew their own. It's not quite the complete solution but it'd be a damn good start, the extra revenue raised could help with alcohol education and policing licensed premises.

im not so sure increasing the price puts people off.
look at smoking, i dunno anybody that quit because of cost. i do know alot of people that moved on to roll ups to save money (which to me seems alot more unhealthy)

also, i think pubs are finding life hard enough at the moments.
putting prices up will put more of them over the edge and putting more people out of work
                  but thats just my opinion.
i have to admit i'm a little biased, as i regularly frequent my local watering hole....
speaking of which, pub time ...
